Its 12:23pm in a 7-11. An anxious crowed has gathered around the cash register. Others are hurrying in to buy their last minute lunch needs. Norman usually avoids the convenience store traffic at this hour, but today he was in a different mood. One might say this was a more adventurous Norman.
As Norman walked in with his unusually upbeat mood he starts contemplating what type of beverage he wants. He knows today is, for whatever reason, special. So he decides to drift off from his usual Mountain Dew fountain drink.
Norman made his way through the long refrigerator isle with what seems like an endless choice of beverages. He eventually made it to the alcoholic beverages. Of course Norman isn't a day drinker, but his adventurous mood has him contemplating buying a beer before his lunch break is over.
"A 24 might make a great day even better." he thought. "Its not nearly enough to get me drunk. And as long as I chew a piece of gum, no one will even notice a smell. No one. will. know."
After thinking about it for a few moments, Norman takes the dive. He grabs a Michelob and eagerly walks to the register, although his mood is now being influenced with a small amount of anxiety since he had never bought beer at this time of day.
His anxiety grows as he gets closer and closer to the register. But the adventurous side of him is pushing him to get through this. Now that he is in line with the 24oz beer in plain view, Norman starts getting the false sense of people looking at him and judging his decision to purchase alcohol. In his mind, everyone is looking at the beer in his hand and is judging his decision.
It is his turn at the register.
Norman notices that the cashier is a young girl. Her eyes were blue and her hair blonde. She is very petite, but definitely cute. She seems to be just out of high school and too young to sell alcohol. This makes Norman a even more anxious.
"Will that be all?" asks the young cashier with smile that displays perfect teeth.
Now this is a simple question that is almost always predictable. Its not something that will throw a normal person off guard. But in this situation, buying beer at lunch time in a 7-11 that is crowded with judging eyes and with the prettiest cashier, Norman's brain slowed down so that it could process all that is going on.
He managed to stutter a nervous, "Yeah."
As he begins to pull his wallet out of his pocket, he senses an intense stare from the cashier. He looks up to see a smirk and then her blue eyes looking right into his. Almost like she was checking him out. Normans heart raced. He can feel her eyes scanning every inch of his face which has now turned red.
"May I see your I.D., Sir?"
Norman throat drops to his stomach as he realizes that his I.D. was left back in the car. He can sense the anxious crowed behind him waiting for him to verify his age.
"I-I uh, left it in the car."
"That's, o.k. sir. I'll just push this aside and you can go get your I.D."
"o-ok."
Norman walks out of the store defeated. His adventurous mood is gone.
He gets back to his car and opens his center console to dig around for his I.D. After removing several receipts and other debris, he spots it. He picks it up and reveals a photo of Norman that was lying underneath.
This photo calmed him. Norman is no longer anxious. He sits down in his car and decides not to go back in the 7-11.
He turns on the car to return to work.
The radio displays 12:37pm.
