I realize this is kinda-sorta off-topic, but I really don't know where to ask. I've got a bit of a problem with my drinking water, and /r/Cooking has really impressed me for the most part by being full of really cool people, so I'm hoping someone can help me out.
A couple days ago I noticed a pretty strong metallic taste to my water. We use one of those hybrid refrigerator/freezer things with a filtered water spigot built in. Over the following two days, the metallic taste only increased.
I removed the ice tray, and discovered what appeared to be several substantial splotches of rust on this big metal cork-screw thing that rotates to move the ice around. I dumped all of the ice, cleaned the rust off fairly easily, and put it back into place. I then replaced the water filter.
After replacing the water filter, I followed the instructions and ran about 2 gallons through. The first quarter-gallon or so was clear water--then the water started coming out brown for about a gallon, and then cleared up.
That was about 4 hours ago.
Unfortunately, the metallic taste persists, and there is a noticeable odor when opening the freezer/refrigerator. I realize that iron in water does not pose a health risk, but it tastes really, really nasty. And normally that would be reason enough to seek help/advice, but I am also fortunate enough to suffer from a number of unpleasant, persistent health issues that include, among other things, reflux. Which means I get a rusty taste in my mouth when I drink my water, and for about 2-3 hours afterwards.
Which ain't fun, I gotta say.
So, anyway, if you fine folks can look past this being a bit off-topic for a cooking board, I'd really appreciate it. And, hell, if you can offer me some advice on next-steps, that's be fantastic too.
