[R] When repairmen offer to "fix" something instead of replacement for a margin of the price india

I've noticed this whenever we have some electronic item broken that we have called the company's official repairmen for, the product is out of warranty and the replacement of the broken part would cost a bit. Has happened with computers (including my laptop), refrigerators, washing machines, A.C.s... you get the gist.

If something huge is broken, think the refrigerator's compressor, the guy will usually tell us that it will cost us in the vicinity of a few grand. Now when we tell them that we'll think about it, he takes the service charge and just when he's about to leave, offers to "fix" the product for a margin of the price. And thankfully, the product ends up working for a few more years.

Now I know why they do this - they just want some extra money to flow into their pockets without their bosses/company knowing about it.

Thinking about it, I realize that if I were his boss/company I'd be really pissed if this happened more than once (not to mention how they end up "bragging" that everyone in the area knows them and how they're the go-to guy for anything electronic that needs fixing).

What I want to know is, is this legal? As in, could there be some kind of a setup between their manager and them that makes this happen without the company knowing about it? Also, is this just a Delhi thing?
