I was born in an abandoned school bus in a remote area of Northern California, and spent my childhood living in that, in tents, or ramshackled shacks.

I did not really have much interaction with other humans until adulthood -- I often say, it was an exciting time if the propane man and the Jehovah's Witnesses came to visit in the same six months!

I was about seven when I learned that electricity and toilets were things people could have in their houses, and not just limited to public buildings. I didn't use a telephone til age 8 or 9 (we didn't have one), never saw a movie until my teen years, and I was an adult before I learned how to use a microwave or buy things at a store. The article was written by some German journalists writing about the West Coast who stumbled upon our residence while looking for our neighbor. The wooden box was our "refrigerator", the raccoons were looking in through the front bus window (they were common visitors!)
