Question for people who have gone off grid. homestead

For those who have gone off grid I have a couple of questions for you.

I am looking to buy property in a remote area. I don't particularly have a need to be located near a city. An intention of mine that I have had for a while is to purchase land and construct a small cabin on it. The cabin is going to be small just due to preference. I intend not to spend all day in it. I will be building with the help of my fiancé and family. I do not want to and cannot afford to pay someone to build everything for me.

  • For water I intend to have a well that is eventually powered by either a generator when we need water or a solar panel if it is sufficient to run the pump.

  • Any appliances we would have will be run from propane. Stove, refrigerator, water heater, &c. If there are any other sources of power for these appliances I don't know of them.

  • For a toilet we are going to put in a compost toilet. I am convinced from hearing the stories of people on this reddit that they do not pose a sanitation problem if done correctly.

  • Heating will be done with a wood stove. Since the cabin is so small it should heat it just fine.

For people who have done something similar to this: was it difficult to find a place with building codes that permit such a thing? I imagine in remote areas this becomes less of a problem. For reference we have been considering recently Northern Idaho/Western Montana, Northeast Minnesota, and maybe the Pacific Northwest.

I just want to know what to expect down the road once my fiancé and I have put enough money away.

Thanks everybody.
