Kitchen not plumbed for ice maker, can I remove the unit from the freezer to gain capacity? Appliances

My home was built before ice makers were common and my kitchen is not plumbed to provide water to the refrigerator. I'm planning to replace the fridge soon but the overwhelming majority include ice makers which will be wasted in my application. My question is can I remove the ice maker and accompanying bucket/storage, and feed augur to increase my freezer capacity?
