Kegerator temperature controller probe wire broke Homebrewing

So, my girlfriend came into the room the other night wondering why the ice buildup on the kegerator had fallen down. Found out my temperature controller had fallen off the back of my lid. The copper wire leading inside to the temperature probe snapped in half when it fell.

I unplugged everything and stripped the wire on both ends, twisted it together and threw some electrical tape on it to see if it would still work, but it's not turning the freezer on. I plugged the freezer in directly and it's still functioning.

Just wondering if the unit it shot, or if there is a more proper way to bind the copper wire together to make it work again.

This is the unit I have

Thanks!
