WEAPONS USED: KITCHEN KNIFE (PRESUMED)
INCIDENT DESCRIPTION:
At 11:59 pm Lt. Alexander, Lt. Aaron, Det. Lynch, and I responded to a radio call stating a home had been broken into and that there were two children alone in the home. Upon arrival, we met Mr. Michael Karns who was standing in the middle of the street next to his vehicle. He claimed he had just arrived and had been texting back and forth with his daughter when she told him the lights went out in her home and she stopped responding. His daughter lives across the street from the home we were called to (604 [redacted], Chesapeake, VA 23322). Lt. Alexander and Det. Lynch went to 604 [redacted], and Lt. Aaron and I continued into 605 [redacted]. We entered into the home through the side door which opens into the dining room and kitchen. The glass pane in the door had been shattered, and glass littered the floor inside the kitchen. It appeared as though someone had reached through the door to unlock it. The kitchen was in disarray. All the drawers had been pulled out and emptied onto the floor. The refrigerator was standing open and food had been swept off the shelves. There were two large dog bowls which had been kicked over and dog food and water were all over the floor. Lt. Aaron and I readied our weapons and called out. There was no response.
We moved into the living room where it appeared as though all the family pictures hanging on the wall had been smashed. Some had fallen off the wall. We moved out into the hallway to get to the stairs and saw more smashed pictures and a lamp that had been knocked over. We called out again but there was no answer. We drew our weapons and went upstairs. The first two rooms appeared to be a master bedroom and a sewing room with no apparent damage.
The third bedroom appeared to be a teenage girl's bedroom, with the dresser drawers pulled out and all the clothes dumped on the floor. There was a vanity with a mirror which was smashed, and an apple laptop charger on the desk but no laptop. The closet doors were hanging off the hinges.
The last door at the end of the hall by the window appeared to be a young boy's bedroom. There we found the body of Jacob Richardson. His throat had been cut. He was wearing a pair of Minecraft pajama pants and an oversized Wildcats tshirt. We called for backup, forensics, and an ME before heading back downstairs. On our way out we checked the garage, which appeared secure and unbothered.
We attempted to contact ms. Jennette Richardson, Emily and Jacob's mother, however, we were unable to reach her by phone or text. We were able to reach Mr. Almon Carter, Ms. Richardson's boyfriend, who agreed to meet us at the precinct to give a statement.
Mr. Carter has no power of attorney for Emily, and Emily's father passed away in 2005. As of right now we cannot determine Emily and Jacob's next legal guardians.

WITNESSES: MICHAEL ALAN KARNS
EVIDENCE: SEE ATTACHED EVIDENCE LIST
WEAPONS USED: UNKNOWN
INCIDENT DESCRIPTION:
At 11:59 pm Lt. Aaron, Lt. Alexander, Det. Makaio, and I responded to a radio call stating a home had been broken into and that there were two children alone in the home. Upon arrival, we met Mr. Michael karns in the street. He said he had just arrived and had been texting back and forth with his daughter when she told him the lights went out in her home and she stopped responding. His daughter lives across the street from the home we were originally called to (604 [redacted], Chesapeake, VA 23322). Lt. Aaron and Det. Makaio went to 605 [redacted], and Lt. Alexander and I went across the street into 604 [redacted].
We entered the home through the front door, which was standing open with a key in the lock on a green and gold wildcats keychain. The keychain had "michelle's house" written across the front in gold sharpie. Mr. Karns confirmed that the key in the lock was the spare house key which Mrs. Karns had given to Emily Richardson. The power had been cut off in the home, so we were using our flashlights to look around. Lt. Alexander asked Mr. Karns where the breaker box was, and Mr. Karns indicated it was in the den. We found the breaker box with the door open, and the main power breaker switched to "off".
Other than the breaker box, the home seemed in order. There was no visible damage or disarray. We moved into the kitchen and saw that the pantry door was open, and the boxes and cans in the pantry were knocked off the shelves and strewn across the floor. There was an iPhone on the floor of the pantry with its screen shattered, which Mr. Karns confirmed to be Michelle's. We checked the rest of the home, however, nothing else seemed out of place. On our way out we also checked the detached garage, which appeared to be secure and unharmed.
Mrs. Karns appeared on the scene shortly after we completed our check of the home. Mrs. Karns asked if they could organize a neighborhood search, and I deflected the question to Lt. Alexander. Mrs. Karns then provided us clothing for our k-9 unit and pictures of both girls. After that we cleared the home for forensics.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Karns came back to the precinct and provided recorded witness statements. They both indicated they could not think of anyone who would have a grudge against them or a preoccupation with either girl.

WITNESS STATEMENT
CHESAPEAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT
CASE NO.: 17-0358745-00
DATE: 30 JUNE 2017
TIME: 1:24 AM TAKEN BY: DET MAKAIO
METHOD: TRANSCRIPTION - RECORDED INTERVIEW
[TRANSCRIPT BEGINS, 1:24 AM]
Det. Makaio: Alright Mr. Almond, you've agreed to a recorded interview in lieu of a written statement. Is that correct?
Mr. Carter: I suppose so. I mean, I gotta, right? Not like I got a choice?
Det. Makaio: Sir, like I stated before, if you're uncomfortable with me recording our conversation you are welcome to provide a written statement.
Mr. Carter: No, no, it's fine. It's fine. I'm no good at writing anyway.
Det. Makaio: Okay sir. Alright. Can you please state and spell your full name for the record?
Mr. Carter: Sure, name's Almon Lee Carter, A-L-M-O-N L-E-E C-A-R-T-E-R.
Det. Makaio: I apologize, I've been saying your name wrong this whole time. I'm sorry.
Mr. Carter: No problem, it happens all the time.
Det. Makaio: I know the feeling, no one gets my name right either. [laughs] Alright can you state your date of birth please?
Mr. Carter: Sure, [REDACTED].
Det. Makaio: Valentine's Day.
Mr. Carter: Yessir, though my family never put much stock by frou-frou holidays like that.
Det. Makaio: Of course. And can you tell me your relationship to Emily and Jacob richardson?
Mr. Carter: They're my lady friend's kids. My girlfriend's kids.
Det. Makaio: I see. And how long have you been in a relationship with Mrs. Richardson?
Mr. Carter: Ms.
Det. Makaio: I'm sorry?
Mr. Carter: Ms. Richardson. She don't go by missus anymore, she goes by miz.
Det. Makaio: Apologies. How long have you been in a relationship with Ms. Richardson?
Mr. Carter: About a year and a half now? Give or take a few weeks maybe.
Det. Makaio: So you've been dating for quite some time now, yes?
Mr. Carter: I suppose so.
Det. Makaio: Alright. How well do you know Emily and Jacob Richardson?
Mr. Carter: Not that well to be honest. Jenny didn't spend a lot of time with them so neither did I. Their daddy passed away a few years ago and ever since then she didn't seem all that comfortable around them. Not that she ain't a good mother, mind you, but I think it was painful for her, you know? And she always told me she didn't mix her boyfriends with her kids.
Det. Makaio: Yeah I can understand that.
Mr. Carter: Yeah. Plus Em is a teenage girl, you know how teenage girls are, don't you? You got kids?
Det. Makaio: I have three. 14, 12, and 8.
Mr. Carter: Yeah I got two of my own but they're grown now. 21 and 22. You know how teenagers get. They don't like or care about nothin'.
Det. Makaio: [laughs] Yep.
Mr. Carter: Not a single thing. You try to get them interested in anything and they just --
Det. Makaio: [interrupting] I apologize, Mr. Carter, but let's try to focus. I need some information from you about Ms. Richardson if you don't mind.
Mr. Carter: Sure. Sorry.
Det. Makaio: We attempted to contact Ms. Richardson by phone but she didn't answer. Instead, you picked up her cell phone. Can you tell me why that is?
Mr. Carter: Well they took it from her. Gave it to me for safekeeping. Same with her shoelaces and her belt.
Det. Makaio: Who took it from her?
Mr. Carter: The doctors at the psychiatric center.
Det. Makaio: Ms. Richardson is at a psych center?
Mr. Carter: Yes sir. [sighs] Jenny's been having some mental problems lately. I picked her up this afternoon and she was going to come over and spend the night, just us, because she's been really stressed out over work lately. She's a temp, see, and doesn't always get work. But you best believe those bills keep coming.
Det. Makaio: Yeah.
Mr. Carter: Anyway, I picked her up around what, maybe 3:00? And we went to the harris teeter and picked up some stuff for dinner and a few bottles of wine and then we headed back to my place.
Det. Makaio: Where is your place, exactly?
Mr. Carter: [redacted], in Deep Creek. In the neighborhood behind the [redacted].
Det. Makaio: Can you give me the exact address, for the record?
Mr. Carter: Sure, [redacted].
Det. Makaio: Thank you. Go on, so you picked up stuff for dinner.
Mr. Carter: Yeah. And I was pretty beat because I had a migraine earlier in the day, so I decided to take a nap when we got back to my house.
Det. Makaio: Okay.
Mr. Carter: So I went to sleep on the couch, maybe around 5. Jenny was watching some tv show on netflix. I woke up a couple hours later and she wasn't sitting there anymore and it was quiet in the house. I saw the car was still in the driveway so I called out to her but she didn't answer.
Det. Makaio: Where did you find her?
Mr. Carter: She was in the bathroom that's in my bedroom. She had two empty bottles of wine and an empty benadryl bottle, one of those big ones, you know, like this big? [indicates with his hands about four inches high]
Det. Makaio: Yeah I know what you mean. Where did she get it?
Mr. Carter: It was mine. I have real bad allergies, especially around here where there's always pollen or mold or smoke or what have you. So I always keep the stuff on hand. I buy it in bulk at costco.
Det. Makaio: Okay so then what did you do next?
Mr. Carter: Well to be honest sir I panicked. I wasn't thinking straight. I picked her up and put her in the shower, turned the cold water on her but she didn't wake up. She was still breathing though so I stuck her in the backseat of my car and booked it to Chesapeake Regional. I probably should have called 911.
Det. Makaio: Is that the closest ER?
Mr. Carter: Damned if I know, but it's the only one I know, so I took her there. They wouldn't let me see her since I'm not family, but after they did whatever to her they let me sit with her. She wasn't talking. Then a doctor came in and asked me a lot of the same questions you are, and told me they were transporting her to virginia beach psychiatric center because she she had tried to do suicide.
Det. Makaio: I see. Was this out of the blue for you, or did you see any warning signs? Was she depressed or upset?
Mr. Carter: She did seem kind of depressed. She wouldn't really talk to people much anymore, but when I tried to talk to her about it she got mad and stopped talking to me too. I been trying to get her some help, but she wouldn't talk to a therapist or anything. I don't know what she's upset about, either.
Det. Makaio: Did she have a good relationship with her kids?
Mr. Carter: I assume so. She was always talking about them. Emily's in marching band, plays drums. And Jacob really likes to read, you know, them wimpy kid books? He loves those.
Det.makaio: I have to ask - why didn't you call Emily and tell her what happened to her mom?
Mr. Carter: Well that's a good question. I guess the answer is that I was too busy trying to deal with the situation at the time, then afterwards I assumed the hospital would call Emily herself. I don't know, she's just a kid.
Det. Makaio: Does she have any aunts or uncles in the area who could watch her and her brother if Ms. Richardson wasn't able to?
Mr. Carter: No, they always went across the street to Michelle's house. They were like a second family to Em and Jake. I think Emily even had a key to their house.
Det. Makaio: Oh? Did Ms. Richardson tell you she had a key?
Mr. Carter: No emily said it. They was arguing one time and Emily said she was going to go across the street and stay there instead. Jenny looked out the window and told her they weren't home, but Em said she had a key and could go over there any time she wanted. I don't think she went over there that night, though. I think she just stormed up to her room and slammed the door.
Det. Makaio: So what happened after Ms. Richardson got settled at the psych center? It's after 1 o'clock in the morning, where did you go between leaving her at the center and coming here to talk to me?
Mr. Carter: I'm not too proud to say it but I went home and cried my eyes out, then fell asleep. Jenny may be a mess but she's my mess and I love her. Now that I'm talking to you it's obvious I should have gone to the house to check on Emily and Jacob, but I assumed they were with Michelle and her mom, and that was a pretty traumatic experience for me, seeing Jenny like that. Knowin' she gave up like that. I was gonna call Emily in the morning and maybe take her to the center to see her mom if they'd let us. I should've gone back. Maybe I could have been there for her and she'd still be here. Maybe if I had just -- [sobs]
Det. Makaio: Mr. Carter, I know you're not particularly close to Emily or Michelle, but do you know anyone who disliked them, hated them maybe?
Mr. Carter: No. They're a pain in the ass like all teenage girls are, but they're good girls. Michelle does this honors society thing. And Emily's real pretty and talented. Everybody likes them.
Det. Makaio: Do you know anyone who would have a grudge against Ms. Richardson or Mrs. Karns?
Mr. Carter: No. Jenny's ex husband is dead, and Shannon and her ex husband are still really good friends. I always wondered why they split up to begin with. They seem really good at uh what do you call it co-parenting?
Det. Makaio: Mr. Carter, is there anything else you remember, or that you'd like to say before we conclude the interview?
Mr. Carter: No i've told you everything i can think of.
Det. Makaio: Alright. Thank you for meeting with me so late at night. We appreciate your cooperation, especially since time is of the essence right now. If you think of anything, see anything, or remember anything, anything at all, give me a call, okay? Here's my card, i wrote my cell phone number on the back.
Mr. Carter: Thanky you, officer.
Det. Makaio: You're welcome.

Det. Lynch: Thank you for coming in, Mr. Karns.
Mr. Karns: Of course.
Det. Lynch: Just to recap, you've agreed to a recorded interview rather than a written statement, yes?
Mr. Karns: Yes. I'm sorry, I'm just so exhausted and upset I don't think I can write it all out.
Det. Lynch: It's alright I understand. Can you please state and spell your full name for the record?
Mr. Karns: Michael Alan Karns, M-I-C-H-A-E-L A-L-A-N K-A-R-N-S.
Det. Lynch: Thank you. And your date of birth, please?
Mr. Karns: [REDACTED].
Det. Lynch: Alright. And Michelle Anne Karns is your daughter, correct?
Mr. Karns: Yes sir.
Det. Lynch: Can you tell me what happened tonight, from your perspective?
Mr. Karns: I received a phone call from Shannon -- that's Michelle's mom -- around 11:30 tonight. It surprised me, she's a doctor and she's been working the late night shift so i knew she was at work. She told me that Michelle had called her freaking out because Emily's house had been broken into. She can't just leave the hospital, so she asked me to come to the house to be with Michelle until she could get there. Of course I said yes, and I left my house.
Det. Lynch: Do you know what time you left your house?
Mr. Karns: I honestly don't know. I texted Michelle when I was pulling out of my driveway, though, so you could check the message log.
Det. Lynch: Okay. Then what happened?
Mr. Karns: Well, I live about 15 minutes away from Shannon and Michelle's house. God, I can't believe how quickly it all happened. It was so fast. One minute I was talking to her and then...anyway. I'm sorry. My head is still reeling.
Det. Lynch: Perfectly understandable, it's okay.
Mr. Karns: I -- I don't suppose I could get a drink of water or something?
Det. Lynch: Well our water fountain's broke but I can get you a Coke from the break room. That alright?
Mr. Karns: Sure, if you don't mind. My throat is really dry and sore.
Det. Lynch: Sure, hang on I'll be right back. [leaves room]
Mr. Karns: [sobbing] Oh god, Michelle...honey... [indistinct sobbing]
Det. Lynch: [enters room] Here you go. Oh, oh man, hey, you want a tissue?
Mr. Karns: I'm sorry. No i'm alright. Just...you know.
Det. Lynch: Yeah I know. Let's keep going, though, okay? So you headed out to Shannon and Michelle's house.
Mr. Karns: Yeah. I just got a new car and it's got this audio feature where I can hook up my phone through Bluetooth. So I did, and I used the talk-to-text feature to keep in touch with Michelle while i drove. I asked her what she saw and to check the locks again.
Det. Lynch: And what did she say?
Mr. Karns: She said the kitchen was all messed up, and that she saw a lamp knocked over. Emily's house has this big window at the end of the upstairs hallway, and you can see most of the hallway from our living room if you look up. Emily and Michelle used to flash lights at each other in code when they were kids. She said she could see Jacob's door was closed and she hoped Emily was in there. That's when I asked her to check the locks around the house again.
Det. Lynch: And did she?
Mr. Karns: Yeah. But then she didn't answer me for a minute so I sort of checked in with her and asked what was going on, and she told me that Jacob's door was open and so was the front door to Emily's house.
Det. Lynch: And what did you say?
Mr. Karns: My stomach dropped. That's some scary shit, you know? That's my daughter. My only kid. I told her to hide. To put her phone on silent and to hide. I was only about five minutes away at that point, but I wanted her to be safe. She told me she hid in the kitchen pantry.
Det. Lynch: Then what happened?
Mr. Karns: I was speeding like a goddamn demon. I was one street over when Michelle texted me asking if I was the one who had come in the front door. I told her not to move, that I was just one street away. That's the last time I spoke to her.
Det. Lynch: She stopped answering you?
Mr. Karns: Yeah. I parked in the middle of the street not even three minutes later. The door was wide open, but I could hear sirens close by so I didn't run in. You guys pulled up less than 30 seconds later. I should have run in. I should have gone in to find my daughter.
Det. Lynch: Sir, I'm sorry I know you're upset, but you did the right thing. You don't know what you could have come across, and it was smart of you to wait for the police.
Mr. Karns: Do you have kids?
Det. Lynch: No sir, I don't.
Mr. Karns: Then with all due respect, sir, please don't tell me I did the right thing.
Det. Lynch: Yes, sir. [clears throat] Can you think of anyone who might have a grudge against you or Mrs. Karns?
Mr. Karns: No, no one comes to mind.
Det. Lynch: What about Michelle?
Mr. Karns: No, not that I know of.
Det. Lynch: What about anyone who might have a grudge against the Richardson family?
Mr. Karns: I don't know. All I can think is maybe one of Jennette's ex boyfriends, but they come and go and don't seem to make a fuss. And no one could hate those kids, Jacob is a sweet kid, bookworm type. Emily is popular at school. She's very beautiful and talented, and she tends to have boys flocking to her. Maybe she hurt the wrong boy or turned down the wrong person.
Det. Lynch: Mr. Karns, is there anything else you remember, or that you want to tell me, before we conclude the interview?
Mr. Karns: Michelle has a tattoo. Shannon would flip a shit, she doesn't know about it. It's small, about 2 inches square, between her shoulder blades. A conch shell, with the words "Michelle Ma Belle" around it. Her grandmother was the one who started calling her "Chelle". They were very close. When she died, Michelle adopted "Chelle" as her nickname and wanted to get a tattoo in remembrance of her grandmother. The Beatles lyrics are because I used to sing her that song all the time. Anyway, I took her to get it done a few weeks ago, maybe middle of May.
Det. Lynch: Thank you. Alright. If you remember anything or have any additional information for me, call me. Here's my card, my cell phone number is on the back, right here.
Mr. Karns: Okay -- is that a four or a nine?
Det. Lynch: Uh, it's a four. Sorry, my handwriting is --
Mr. Karns: -- no it's okay mine is too --
Det. Lynch: -- a mess, here i'll fix it --
Mr. Karns: No it's okay, i got it.
Det. Lynch: Okay well thank you for coming in.
Mr. Karns: Of course.

Det. Lynch: Thank you for coming in. I know it's late so we'll try to be brief. Just to recap, you've agreen to a recorded interview in lieu of a written statement, is this correct?
Mrs. Karns: Yes it is.
Det. Lynch: Okay, thank you. Can you please state and spell your name for the record?
Mrs. Karns: Shannon Mae Karns, S-H-A-N-N-O-N M-A-E K-A-R-N-S.
Det. Lynch: Thank you. And your date of birth, please?
Mrs. Karns: [REDACTED].
Det. Lynch: Thank you. And can you tell me what happened tonight, from your perspective?
Mrs. Karns: Michelle called me freaking out because she said the power had gone out in Emily's house across the street and when they came back on she saw that the house had been broken into. She also told me Emily was acting strangely and sent me a screenshot of their conversation.
Det. Lynch: Did you think Emily was acting strangely?
Mrs. Karns: Well the conversation certainly was strange. Emily has a severe fear of the dark. Once, when the power went out at her house, Michelle and I had to physically go over to her house and get her, because she was so terrified she didn't want to leave her room. We found her curled up in a ball under her comforter, crying. That was before Jacob was born. I had to literally pick her up and carry her back to our house. In the conversation Michelle showed me, Emily didn't seem bothered by the fact that the power had gone out. And she kept telling Michelle not to call me or call the police. Then she sent one message where it just said 'don't call the police' over and over again, and I think that's when Michelle panicked.
Det. Lynch: What happened then?
Mrs. Karns: I told Michelle to make sure all the doors and windows were locked, and that I was going to call her father to come to the house.
Det. Lynch: And did you?
Mrs. Karns: Yes. Mike said he'd leave immediately, and that he'd text Michelle until he got there so he knew she was safe.
Det. Lynch: Then what happened?
Mrs. Karns: I was doing my best to find a resident to come in and cover for me at the hospital, but I couldn't find anyone. Holiday weekend, you know? I told Michelle i'd be there as soon as i could and that her father was on the way.
Det. Lynch: Did you talk to her again after that?
Mrs. Karns: No I didn't.
Det. Lynch: Why not?
Mrs. Karns: I was calling every resident in the area to see if they could come cover for me. I trusted Mike would be there shortly so I focused on finding a replacement so I could leave.
Det. Lynch: Makes sense. Mrs. Karns, can you think of anyone who might have a grudge against you and Michelle?
Mrs. Karns: No. Usually in divorce cases you'd think the other parent, but Mike and I are still very good friends.
Det. Lynch: What about someone who might be angry with the Richardson family?
Mrs. Karns: I wouldn't know, to be honest. Jennette keeps to herself and her boyfriends. Most of the time the kids are over at our house. The girls are pretty good about hanging out with Jacob and not leaving him out. We've all but adopted Emily. She's Michelle's best friend, they've been joined at the hip since they were five. If someone were angry with them, I think I might have some idea of it.
Det. Lynch: So you're very close with the girls?
Mrs. Karns: I'd say so. Both of them come talk to me when they're having problems, and I'm happy to be there for them.
Det. Lynch: Had either of them come to you with any problems lately?
Mrs. Karns: Not really. Emily mentioned some unwanted attention she was getting recently, but it didn't seem to really bother her since she didn't go into details. She's a very pretty girl, and unfortunately she's used to attention of that kind. She usually ignores it.
Det. Lynch: Is there anything else you can think of that we need to know about?
Mrs. Karns: Michelle has a tattoo. She thinks I don't know about it, but I saw it recently when she forgot to leave her hair down. I think it was a seashell, with some words around it, on her upper back. It looked like it was relatively new, though, maybe about a month old. I'd be angry, but she never goes crazy or acts irresponsibly - i've been very lucky in that regard - so I can only assume it has some deep meaning to her and she went with her father to get it done. It's probably because of her nickname "Chelle".
Det. Lynch: [chuckling] Alright Mrs. Karns. Thank you for your time.
Mrs. Karns: You're welcome.
