I've been able to lucid dream since I was really young. I think it all began when I started to get horrific nightmares as a kid (to the point that I was terrified to even fall asleep) but with practice, I was able to recognize within the nightmare that I was dreaming, and literally will myself to wake up. From there, instead of screaming at myself to wake up within the dream, I was able to use that moment of realization to begin to twist the dream to my own design. It started with making the monster/killer/horrible situation disappear, but then I was eventually able to craft an entire new dream with new characters, etc. I've had some really cool experiences with this.
However, I had a really strange experience a couple of days ago and was wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. I had come to a point within a dream that I suspected I was dreaming, so I used one of my reality checks, which was seeing if I could start flying by running and jumping into the air. In the dream, I immediately started flying. I lost control of the dream pretty quickly however and "woke up" in my bed a couple of minutes later. I proceeded to get up and go about my normal routine. It was so convincingly vivid and nothing at all felt strange, until I sat down with my husband in our dining room for breakfast and a bullet hole suddenly appeared on his forehead while he wore a really creepy/unnatural smile on his face in a frozen state. I used another one of my reality checks, slapping myself on the arm to see if it hurt, and again realized that I was dreaming. I screamed at myself to wake up.
So, again, I woke up in my bed, thought about how weird the false awakening was, and started morning ritual, only for everything in the dream to suddenly appear black and white. Cue the reality check. This repeated at least TEN TIMES!! There was always some kind of weird and different indicator that I had not truly woken up yet, like opening my refrigerator and finding that it was entirely filled with maggots, getting a phone call from my boss that I had been fired for being late even though I wasn't, feeling this constant presence of something evil, etc. By the time I had woken up for real I was seriously questioning reality and terrified that something scary and weird was just around the corner!
I've never had so many false awakenings in a row, and wanted to see if anyone else has had something like this happen. It was so weird but kind of cool at the same time!
