Fridgidaire refrigerator/top freezer will cool for a few hours after turning defrost timer. fixit

Brand new refrigerator (top freezer) was working fine for a few days then I noticed the food in the fridge wasn't very cold and then the ice in the ice maker had melted and then frozen over and eventually just completely melted. I checked both fans and they are running and the compressor does turn on and off. There was no frost clogging anything as far as I could tell. After some searching online I got a screwdriver and turned the defrost timer which make the freezer start getting cold however it only stayed cold for about five hours and then everything started to get hot again. The refrigerator doesn't seem to get cold but I'm assuming that's because it was hot to start with. Also the freezer never got cold enough to freeze anything but that also might be because it was hot to start off. If I keep manually turning the defrost timer the cycle repeats. I've pretty much exhausted my resources at this point and any help would be appreciated.
