(AUS)My father just lost his job after 25 years, what can we do now? personalfinance

So the company my dad used to work for (AUSTRAL) shut down, driving all employees into redundancy. He's been unemployed for a couple of months now and he sits around at home most of the time with nothing to do.

My dad (53) is a refugee from Vietnam and came here almost 30 years ago so his English skills are not great AT ALL. When he came over to Australia he didn't have enough money to go to school or university, so I guess his English never improved from there. I think the worse part about this is that he never made any friends in the workforce due to the language barrier, so he can't use his connections to find another job.

My mother told me that he tried a job today driving around delivering refrigerators, which paid him ONLY $120 over a 12 hour shift cash in hand. This bothers me so much because it's way below minimum wage. It breaks my heart because he used to have a stable job with a salary of $70,000+.

I have offered to teach him computer science, but he feels too defeated and doesn't believe he will do well as he is getting old. I am running out of ideas, so ANY advice or insight is highly appreciated. I have too much weight on shoulders already and don't think I can continue if he doesn't find something soon.

Once again, I value any help that you guys have to offer. Thanks
