ELI5: Why is fluoride in our tap water harmful? explainlikeimfive

I live in southern Nevada (in case anyone happens to know specific info on my areas tap water.). This topic came up in my house because we are moving and the new refrigerator has a water dispenser.

We were curious if the filter is that "good" . Or if we should get a water cooler with a 5 gallon jug, wich we are anyway.

We also have a britta filter that attaches to sink. This i know isnt the best method.

But all the hype is fluoride in our water. If there is scientific evidence supporting it being harmful, how is it still in our water? Thanks guys
