How to record the sounds in my apartment as I hear them? NoStupidQuestions

I'm trying to figure out what I need to record the sounds that I hear in my apartment - footsteps and voices outside, the hum of the refrigerator, the sound of me walking around in here, everything. I know basically nothing about audio recording after several hours of reading, searching, and messing with Audacity and various other apps.

Most of the "amateur" information or equipment that I can find is specifically geared towards recording voices or otherwise eliminating the ambient sounds that I wish to capture. The discussions that I do find regarding ambient sound are professionals talking about equipment that costs hundreds of dollars or more.

I understand that the human ear and brain are very advanced, but is there any way to reproduce what I hear at any level of accuracy without monstrously expensive equipment? Adjusting gain with the PC and phone microphones that I have available didn't seem to help.

If there is an appropriate sub for this question, that would be helpful info as well. I looked at /r/audio but I don't think they would welcome such a noob question.
