I have an Acer Aspire V3-551-8469 running Windows 8.1 for those interested.
Apparently at some point in the past month something software specific has changed which causes the fan control on my computer to basically run at the same speed regardless of processor load. This is causing overheating just by watching Netflix for two hours. I've had this happen before a year ago after I updated to windows 8.1. I think something changed in the communication from the OS to the fan control. I tried updating the bios which didn't help, but changing my power use settings did if I set the charging settings the same as on battery use. Wasn't happy with the fix but it worked and the fan began running correctly again.
One year later now something else has changed and it's exhibiting the same problem. So I decided to try refreshing it first and if that didn't work reset back to factory settings. In the middle of the refresh however the computer overheated and powered off.
Currently my laptop it is now sitting in the refrigerator repairing the hard drive.
Any ideas how I could fix/diagnose the fan problem in windows 8.1 if the problem goes away once I reset to 8?
