Contents of my untitled notebook. awakened

In lieu of the recent thread about a notebook filled with "basic truths" for spiritual growth, and understanding the nature of reality, I thought I'd share the contents of my own notebook of a similar nature.

These quotes had a few primary sources.

Nisargadatta Maharaj I Am That John Kent Ph.D. Thesis Wei Wu Wei The Tenth Man Anthony DeMello Awareness

(I apologize if there are any typos that change the meaning of the passages)

Can you deny the presence of awareness right now and in any moment? It is not a matter of seeing it or not. You do not see it or get it because you are it. It is more a brute undeniable fact. Everything that appears is just a movement in, on and through that presence-awareness. Recognize that without being-awareness, nothing can be. It is the base-line, the ultimate backstop… It cannot be grasped, understood, attained, or achieved because all of those things are just conceptual movements that are floating in the very presence they are trying to grasp. Al the seeking, getting, understanding and attaining are purely illusory concepts based on the idea that what you are seeking is not present. Those ideas are never fulfilled, because they are based on a misunderstanding waiting for ‘enlightenment’ is a fool’s game because it will never ‘happen.’

~ John Wheeler

Do not struggle with the mind. The mind is only passing thoughts. These are only waves or emanations of awareness itself. It is only awareness appearing as thoughts, so nothing is disturbed or lost. THe coming and going of thoughts does not disturb your nature as awareness in the least. Everything that appears arises from and returns to this. Everything is only the fundamental awareness itself appearing in the form of seeming objects. Things cannot exist as independent entities apart from awareness, so they must be that in essence. So all there is, is one awareness shining in all directions and at all times. Here and now, you are already that. see this and be at peace.

~John Wheeler

One who has seen his true nature no longer regards life as being full of menace and misery as most people do. His previously mistaken sense of personal volition and responsibility has disappeared in such freedom and joy that life is now just an amusing spectacle like a game or a dream in which he has no real part.

~Ramesh Balsekar

’It’s not that I know the answers and you don’t. It’s that I don’t know the questions and you do. I see that the questions that haunt your mind have no reality outside it.’

~Jed McKenna

It's not that kind of ignorance. It’s not the kind where you don’t know something. It’s the kind where you do know something that’s not true.

~Jed McKenna

You can spend your life hacking away at the million-headed hydra of attachment and never make any progress, or you can follow emotional energy back to its source, its lair, and see Leviathan, enemy of light, for what it really is.

~Jed McKenna

I want you to pay attention, become aware, and listen. Can you hear the hum of the refrigerator? The sound of a car passing by your home? A distant dog barking. How about the resonance of your own heart beating? Just by shifting your attention in these moments, … by choosing to modify your awareness, you changed your brain.

~Joe Dispenza

The mind can never grasp it (your true nature), because it contains thinking. However, you can know your real nature for certain any moment because you know you are aware, you know you exist, even without taking thought about it.

~John Wheeler

Tasks are done naturally and are neither easy nor difficult, big or small, and are done without seeking credit and thus can not be discredited

~Tao Te Ching

He cleans the dark mirror of his mind so that it reflects without intent.

~Tao Te Ching

All that can be doubted is false. Only what can stand the fire of the fiercest doubt is true, that is life.

~J. Krishnamurti

To observe your mind and perceive it as a slave, releases it from bondage.

~J. Krishnamurti

The question “Who Am I” has no answer. THere is only looking into who is asking the question until one sees there is only watching the questioning and answering.

~Ramana Maharshi

Seeing the false as false is meditation.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

We must engage in clear witnessing of all inward conditions, our thoughts, desires, reactions, injuries, motives and attitudes with total detachment, non judgement, and no willful efforts to change anything that we see about our nature. We must see how much we are lost in memory and imagination rather than experiencing the reality of our lives directly, and endure the vision without recoil.

~Roy Masters

Science tells us about the show but not the real viewer.

~Richard Rose

How can one really “Be Here Now” without first clearly knowing WHO is being, where HERE is, and what NOW really means, outside of time.

~John Kent

The emphasis on self-knowledge is based on the idea that only those who are real can know reality. The scientist attempting to understand the atom, has to first perfect the instrument and have a microscope free of defects or it will render the findings erroneous.

~John Kent

How can we actualize a self that is unknown, without running the risk of actualizing a self that may not be us. It’s like an astronomer peering through a telescope looking for earth, without stopping to wonder where the tripod rests.

~John Kent

A more accurate way to describe the honest procedure to self-realization is the old joke about how to make a sculpture of a hoarse. The answer is to take the slab of stone and chip away everything that does not look like a horse.

~John Kent

Peace does not lie in a peaceful mind, but in establishing your identity in that which is deeper than the mind.

~John Wheeler

Don’t worry about the appearances. They will change and move as long as you live. it is not a matter of prettying up the appearances. First see what you are. Then you realize that what is going on in the appearance does not touch you.

~John Wheeler

All aversion and resistance is based on ideas and concepts about how things should be or should not be.

~John Wheeler

Trying to be more mindful or present will subtly emphasize the idea that you are separate and can be something other than presence-awareness.

~John Wheeler

States of flow, peak experiences, are all instances where we “lose ourselves. There is something to this, we are peace when we lose ourselves.

~My own musings

I am aware and I exist. This idea of a separate person is a veneer painted over awareness by the particular life experiences that the body/mind has been exposed to. What I am is not , was not, and cannot ever be affected by the paint. It’s like, as Anthony DeMello says, paint being through at the air. It does not paint the air black anymore than the experiences of the body/mind touch the awareness that you are.

~My own musings

It really doesn’t matter whether you agree with what I’m saying or you don’t. Because agreement and disagreement have to do with words and concepts and theories. They don’t have anything to do with truth. Truth is never expressed in words. Truth is sighted suddenly, as a result of a certain attitude, So you could be disagreeing with me and still sight the truth.

~Anthony DeMello

Imagine a patient who tells a doctor what he is suffering from, and the doctor prescribes medicine for the man’s neighbour. We always want someone else to change so we feel better, but then we remain as vulnerable and prone to anger as before.

~Anthony DeMello

Liberation is liberation from the idea of liberation.

~Wei Wu Wei

Light seeking darkness. Light cannot find darkness, because it is the absence of light. The subject (person) cannot find enlightenment, because it is the absence of the subject.

~Wei Wu Wei

But it is a huge joke that we should see, and loud laughter that should greet that seeing, for it is the simplicity and the obviousness of it, in contrast with the monumental superstructure of superfluous mystification that has been built round it, that calls for the laughter.

~Wei Wu Wei

You cannot use self to find Self, because the Sought that is searching for itself cannot find itself by means of what is not there.

~Wei Wu Wei

A ‘mind’ as such cannot be supposed to seek to objectify that by which it is able to objectify, since so doing, it would be objectifying what it itself is.

~Wei Wu Wei

Birth and death. Something cannot come from nothing How can something that was never born ever die? Does a wave die when it hits land? The movement of wind and water ends, but the wave is part of the ocean, it is water, it does not cease to be upon its crash into the shore. Something does not become nothing. We are made of the trees and clouds and dirt, they are all in us and we are in them.

~My own musings.

Effortless effort. A seeming paradox, but it makes sense. All things happen in the flow of time without a doer, as the doer does not exit. But, the idea of a doer with volitional control is an appearance that believes effort is possible. The effort the “me puts in is not done by a “me”, because the me is not existent, so it is effortless effort because there is no one to put in effort.

~My own musings

Not to know, and not to know that one does not know is the cause of endless suffering

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

It is not the theory that matters but the way it is being tested… They are all of some value, only if you are in dead earnest. It is the earnestness that liberates and not the theory.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

The true knowledge of the self is not a knowledge. It is not something you find by searching, by looking everywhere. It is not to be found in space or time. Knowledge is but a memory, a pattern of thought, a mental habit. All these are motivated by pleasure, and pain. it is because you are goaded by pleasures and pain that you are in search of knowledge. Being oneself is completely beyond all motivation. You cannot be yourself for some reason. You are yourself, and no reason is needed.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

Does a happy man seek happiness?

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

The fruit falls suddenly, but the ripening takes time.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

You are the motionless witness of the river of consciousness which changes eternally without changing you in any way.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

You are not to expect an explosion, for the explosion has already happened at the moment when you were born, when you realized yourself as being-knowing-feeling.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

All attachment implies fear, for all things are transient.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

I am like the cinema screen - clear and empty -- the pictures pass over it and disappear, leaving it as clear and empty as before. In no way is the screen affected by the pictures, nor are the pictures affected by the screen. The screen intercepts and reflects the pictures, it does not shape them. It has nothing to do with the rolls of films. These are as they are, lumps of destiny, but not my destiny, the destinies of the people on the screen.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

No amount of looking in any direction could help you to see what is looking.

~Wei Wu Wei

Language can no more transcend duality than paintings or photographs on a flat surface transcend two-dimensions. However, by drawing two-dimensional lines that slant towards a vanishing-point, they are taken to represent the third dimensions of depth.

~Alan Watts

Consciousness is intermittent, full of gaps. Yet there is continuity of identity. What is this sense of identity due to, if not to something beyond consciousness?

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

Experience, however sublime, is not the real thing. By its very nature it comes and goes. Self-realization is not an acquisition. It is more of the nature of understanding. Once arrived at, it cannot be lost.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

Be like the chick that pecks at the shell. speculating about life outside the shell would have been of little use to it, but pecking at the shell breaks the shell from within and liberates the chick. Similarly, break the mind from within by investigation and exposure of its contradictions and absurdities.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

All is seen in daylight - except daylight.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

Just like in all the colours light is the colourless factor, so in every experience awareness is present, yet it is not an experience.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

Whatever may be the experience, true or false, the fact of an experience taking place cannot be denied. it is its own proof. Watch yourself closely and you will see that whatever be the content of consciousness, the witnessing of it does not depend on the cont. Awareness is itself and does not change with the event. ~Nisargadatta Maharaj

What you see as false, dissolves. It is the very nature of illusion to dissolve on investigation. Investigate, that is all. You cannot destroy the false, for you are creating it all the time.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

I may perceive the world just like you, but you believe to be in it, while I see it as an iridescent drop in the vast expanse of consciousness.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

The discovery of the truth is in the discernment of the false. You can know what is not. What is you can only be.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

As the tiny point of a pencil can draw innumerable pictures, so does the dimensionless point of awareness draw the contests of the vast universe. Find that point and be free.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj

Most people live in a continuous state of dissatisfaction with the present condition, when the present condition is the only condition it will ever be.

~My own musings.

We dig a well and create a huge pit. The space in the pit or well has not been created by us. We have just removed the earth which was filling the space there. The space was there then and is also there now. Similarly we have simply to through out all the age long samskaras (innate tendencies) which are inside us.

~Ramana Maharshi

What will come will also go. What always is will alone remain.

~Ramana Maharshi

I know nothing about miracles, and I wonder whether nature admits exceptions to her laws, unless we agree that everything is a miracle.

~Nisargadatta Maharaj
