Norman arrived to work at precisely 8:45am on a Wednesday morning. After placing his brown bagged lunch in the break room refrigerator, Norman began walking to his desk.
Norman's walk takes him past the receptionist's desk. Norman got a small amount of anxiety at this part of his day. The receptionist's desk is usually where all his co-workers gather to chit-chat before beginning their day.
Norman typically prepared a topic of conversation the night before in case the conversation amongst everyone stopped. Norman figured he would then have something to break uncomfortable silence. Norman did not enjoy uncomfortable silence. Luckily, Norman has never once had to share his topic in 15 years at his job.
"Hey Norman, NBD!" A co-worker put up his hand to give Norman an awkward high five.
Norman applied the perfect amount of force in response to what he considered an appropriate high five for a co-worker he rarely spoke to.
"What is NBD?" Norman had never heard this stated.
"That's what we call it when there's no bosses in the office! All the supervisors are having a meeting at the Anytown office. 'No Boss Day!'" -the receptionist replied.
Norman did not understand why this was particularly something to be celebrated. Norman, however, was able to accurately assess the mood of the room and responded favorably to this news.
After a few brief moments of nodding pleasantries, Norman sat down at his desk. Norman gave the same effort and got as much work done as he does every other day.
