How prepping for the inevitable turned me into a solar power junkie preppers

I've been prepping for about 6 months and after storing enough food, water, propane, ammo, whisky and odds and ends for a year it was time for alternative energy. I started with a simple 100 watt setup, 125ah battery and 1000 watt pure sine inverter. It was just enough to power a 35 watt led TV, a couple led lights, and charge my phone. I thought to myself why not use the free power now! So I started using it to run the 32'' TV when the boy was over on the weekends and knowing that it was free power (after the initial upfront cost) I needed more! So I ordered another battery and 2 more panels. I can know run my 60" led TV (average 70 watts) and watch movies and shows through the USB port instead of my HTPC. A buddy gave me a small refrigerator that is only 132 watts,my big fridge was always empty and running. I eat what I store and that's 90% canned food no need for refrigeration. And my microwave for a few minutes a day. Next step more panels and batteries and a larger inverter. I also found a 7 gallon 110v 1440 watt water heater that I can set on a timer to turn on a couple hours before I wake up for work.

I'm now prepping for self sufficiency and the thought of it really puts me at ease. Granted the upfront costs are considerable but you can't put a price on piece of mind!
