First off, I really hate complaining. I don't do it myself that often unless I feel like it really needs to be said. Given that I've dumped a lot of hours into this game and now I feel like I'm wanting to walk away from it... something needs to be said.
Alpha 16 brought some much needed changes to the game. However, it also brought some definitely un-needed changes.
Here's some quick ones off the top of my head:
- All Points of Interest now have a circle cut out around them, and they never match the terrain. Feels like you're entering a snow globe every time you get near one.
- Sleeping Zombies are inconsistent. Some never wake, and about 50% of the zombies don't even make any noise now, so your chances of being startled and or dying very quickly are quite high when entering buildings.
- Zombie hits 90% of the time result in a stun on the first hit. It's impossible to defend yourself, when the chance of being stunned is almost 100%, despite not being able to hear them sneaking up behind you.
- If you like your house/base, you can keep it. That is, until you go off exploring for the day. After repairing our base for the 4th time, completely with reinforced concrete and the v3 Vault doors, came back to find that we had no chests with food left, all the refrigerators had been destroyed. All the doors were destroyed. All the cabinets from the prior house had been almost all destroyed, part of the stairs to the upstairs and some of the floor had been destroyed, and the outside wall of the house was swiss cheese. Furthermore, I built a day 7 bunker about a klick from the house. 12 x 12 blocks, of iron bars and reinforced concrete pillars. No door, only a hatch in the floor so that there wasn't an easy way in or out. Left it and came back after 2 in game days. Half of it had been destroyed. Other than torches on the outside, literally nothing there to gain by destroying it. Zombies simply walked near it, and attacked it.
- torches take an act of congress to get them to sit flush with a wall when placed.
- no forge / workbench / cement mixer can be moved once placed. This is incredibly frustrating.
- Animal spawns are slim to none. I understand that this is supposed to be a zombie survival game... but survival is really really difficult at this point. I rely more on crops and bird eggs to stave off starvation now at this point, more than being able to survive on meat.
- carrying meat with you at any point at night is a joke now. Zombies don't even notice you unless they're within 10 meters of you.
- if you don't log out with 4 blocks of air above your head, expect to be at the highest point of whatever was above your head.
- firearms do not need their own skill tree. I like the changes to the way items and weapons are now, without having to craft 4,000 bows... but.. common. It's hard enough finding parts for the weapons... much less having to have the skill to get a decent one. With how often zombie hordes spawn now, you almost have to have a weapon by night 15.
- no matter where you are, your temperature is like that of a women in menopause. You may be 90F in a forest biome, and then 42F the next. Suddenly it starts raining and you're about to freeze to death, with your temperature plummeting into the teen's .... correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I've ever in the history of being alive, experienced someone get hypothermia, from being outside in the middle of summer, during a rainstorm. Furthermore, I've been to Iraq and Kuwait with temperatures soaring into the 140F. Did I die from heatstroke? No... I did have to drink a lot of extra water though. However, if your temperature in this game goes above 110, there's probably a good chance he will die from sun stroke. Getting your temperature down is no easy feat either and you can cross from a frozen biome into a desert biome and still be losing temperature. It's not until you walk inside some sort of covered shelter that the temperature gets the hint that the biome has changed.
- careful about getting too close to the edge of some of those deep deep hole ridgeline areas that look like some sorta TV Dinner tray... falling into them can mean you falling through the map and dying instantly, with no hope of recovering your backpack.
Guys (The Fun Pimps)... real talk. Stop adding stuff to the game. Yeah I get it, everyone is going to get tired of the game if you don't release new stuff to play with it... but it's better to have a game with quality, rather than quantity. Your movement system is terrible. Running down hills breaks your legs, while jumping off the second story of a building will simply have you sighing out of breath. Animations for things like shooting a bow take forever and the main bow shooting cancel animation is terrible. The arrows aren't even in the center of the reticle. Shooting a headshot requires you to shoot at the bottom right corner of the +. Jumping in a room with the roof being low enough for you to hit your head results in a longer jump animation. Moving feels sluggish and not like realistic acceleration at all. Rain is actually a microsized blizzard that will freeze you to death.
If you need to, hire more people on the staff and start pushing more updates to fix major parts of things that you already have. A GTX 1080 should not be dipping frames at all. I shouldn't have the game sucking up over 20GB of RAM ( I have 32 ). Windows notified me in the middle of a lake the other day that I had low memory. The only things I had running were Discord, Gmail in a chrome browser, and this. Guess which one was sucking up the most memory?
Just for the love of whatever you consider holy.... fix what you have already. Don't add anything. Don't tweak anything. Fix your current core items ( Sound, movement, lighting ) and then work out from there, improving hitboxes, zombie health, aiming reticules... animal spawn rates... temperatures... on and on and so forth. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to play this anymore, and that's really sad because I haven't even explored half of what you've added to the game. The game is so glitchy now, that I feel like I need to do everything in creative mode just to survive.
</end rant>
