Temperature control for fermentation? Homebrewing

I hope to start my first brew (~2 gallons) in the next few weeks, though I'm worried about temperature fluctuations in my rented flat which has very poor insulation. I'm expecting quite large temperature fluctuations during day, morning, afternoon and night, and was wondering about some of the methods that you guys use. I thought about using an old refrigerator, as this should provide a reasonably insulated environment to mitigate the effect of the fluctuating ambient temperature. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
