Why did my milk Jello break? AskCulinary

Yesterday, I thought I'd tried making some dairy-based Jello. I only had lactose-free milk, so I gently heated it up, and poured in the packet of Jello that I had, and made sure it dissolved completed using a strainer.

I put it a container and put that in the refrigerator. When I come to check on it.... Well.... the milk broke. There was clear liquid above, and there were clumps of milk bits on the bottom. So I deemed it unrecoverable and threw it away. But what exactly happened?
