Booby Traps: Workplace food, packages on the front porch, parked cars, locked bicycles ... legaladvice

A group of car loving friends once mused about how to handle car theft. I suggested leaving a car parked and locked in a known high theft area ... full of hornets, or possibly rattlesnakes. Or maybe with a motion activated steel spike in the back of the seat.

Another group of friends wondered the same thing about chained and locked bicycles. A tiny amount of C4 in the seat with a GPS perimeter set to detonate if it moves 50 feet? Or another steel spike that launches up from the seat stem.

I've seen a lot of Reddit posts about packages being stolen from front porches. What about filling one with hornets? Or baby poop and just a little bit of propellant. Enough to cause it to cover the inside of a vehicle. Or several cans of that expanding foam.

The most recent I've seen, but have seen plenty of posts about, is having food stolen from the workplace refrigerator. Would it be illegal to put harmful substances inside food and leave it in public spaces? What if it was less harmful, such as fart powder. What if you'd identified the thief and knew they had an allergy and targeted it?

These are all hypothetical of course. Would a person get sent to jail if they booby trapped their personal belongings in public space? How far can you go, legally, to deter theft and start a trend of thieves being instantly reprimanded for their actions?
