Former Tenants are suing me for $2600 security deposit legaladvice

So I own a rental property in Long Island New York, its a house that is rented for $2600 per month. My former tenants told me two weeks before the lease was to expire that they were not going to stay and did not want to renew. They stayed for two more months out of lease but did continue to pay me rent. The house was not rented for two months, they left in June and I got new tenants in September. When my old tenants left they did not paint anything and actually left some of their furniture: two large sofas, an entertainment center and a large computer desk. Furthermore, some things like a refrigerator drawer was missing, one of the toilets wouldn't flush, a lot of the window screens were ripped and there were apparent sighs of bird droppings. I have not given them their security deposit back yet. They did not allow me 30 days prior to the lease expiring to show the house and for the items that I had to clean/address. I planned on giving them back half - $1800 but I want to itemize everything. I received a letter today stating that I'm being sued by my former tenants for the security deposit. What are my options? Did I wait too long to pay them? Thanks.
