How important is side-to-side clearance for new refrigerators? HomeImprovement

Backstory: we own a rental house (formerly our primary house), and the 10-year old fridge is starting to go. As we pulled the fridge out to work on it, we noticed significant mold on the side wall, and the wall was wet, seemingly coming from condensation from the side of the fridge.

We're having mold tests done to get a complete picture of the wall damage, etc., but I'm assuming that I'll need to have the wall re-drywalled, and we'll get a new fridge.

Now, here's the issue: the opening width for the fridge in between the walls and the counters is almost exactly 35.75" - I don't even think you could fit a piece of paper in between the wall and the fridge. When I checked online for new fridges, I see that 35.75" is a pretty standard width - there are a few slightly smaller fridges, but the majority are 35.75" or wider.

How important is "breathing room" between the sides of the fridge? FWIW, there is ventilation room at the top, and the back of the fridge - the only tight squeeze is width. I'd like to have the wider choices of fridges that 35.75" provides if possible.
