I was at a local supermarket and my girlfriend decided to grab a pop on the way out of the door as we left (They were in a refrigerator next to the exit doors). Basically, the loss prevention team caught her stealing on camera and got MY plate numbers. I get a call from a police officer saying she has several tickets to issue to me and my girlfriend. I get a ticket for retail theft. I did not endorse her stealing, and I didn't realize she had actually just stolen an item by the time we were leaving. It didn't really catch my eye too much when she grabbed it, and I didn't think twice. Well, the officer told me according to the cameras, I watched her steal the sodas. She did not hand me it or show it to me, I simply didn't realize she was stealing. I would have gladly just purchased it, but she decided to steal and get me ticket and a record for retail theft. I haven't gone to court yet.
What are the chances of me getting this ticket dropped?
What sort of things can I do to ensure I get the ticket dropped or changed?
What should I expect?
I am very novice to any sort of law situation such as court or receiving tickets. I have no record and have never stolen. I currently exceed in school and I work part time. I have my own vehicle, no kids etc; I'm on a good path. I feel like this ticket is unfair and I do not deserve it. I do not endorse any sort of theft and I usually stay out of trouble.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
