Is keeping your home cold taking years off your refrigerator? Frugal

I'm all for saving on heating costs by lowering the temperature of the thermostat, but I just found these surprising and concerning comments (search for "refrigerator" to start his points) by, apparently, a fridge tech. His point is that running a fridge with a room temperature of less than 65-70F is causing damage to the fridge, and reducing its lifespan.

Considering I try to keep the house at 58F or so at night, and maybe as low as 55F during vacations, now I'm wondering if this has been a bad plan. And, if going on vacation, I should just empty the fridge if possible and just unplug it for the time gone.
