Norman's alarm sounded in his bedroom and he reached through the darkness to turn it off. He'd been awake for what seemed like hours already as he stared at the ceiling worrying about his day ahead.
Norman had been selected to visit one of his local clients at their offices to discuss the upcoming project that they'd been working on. It meant a day in the neighbouring city, but he didn't get excited about things like that. He liked the safety of a day in his cubicle, on his own. He'd also had to ask his friend to feed Norman while he was out as he'd be arriving home much later than usual. He'd made sure to measure out the correct amount of food for Norman the night before and had placed the bowl in the refrigerator. His favourite shirt hung from the hanger and his shoes had been polished. After all he did need to make a good impression.
Norman reluctantly got out of bed and stood under the hot shower for longer than usual. He stared back at his expressionless reflection in the mirror as he cleaned his teeth while wrapped in his towel. He plodded back through into his bedroom and proceeded to get ready.
As he took another bite from his toast, he fired up his laptop just to double check the documents he'd prepared. Everything seemed fine as he read through the presentation, but it didn't make him feel any less nervous.
He glanced at his emails to distract himself and opened his calendar to check which room the meeting was being held in. His stomach turned as he realised his mistake. The meeting wasn't until Wednesday and today was Tuesday. He'd instead have to ask his friend to feed Norman tomorrow. Norman took off his favourite shirt, changed into the one he'd worn yesterday and ran to catch the bus. It was only as he arrived at work did he realise that he'd forgotten his laptop.
