Current Events OCPoetry

He is writing in shorthand cipher across smooth pages, bound in leather. Notes supplement memory: recollection is a smear, the sentence's imprint on the page opposite and pressed underneath.

– A woman points at the rubble and says “Here is my TV. Here is my refrigerator. Here is my son in the foundations.” – The government has banned the sale of meat. Pre-empting the ensuing rotten meat market, The government has banned hunger.
– Three-hundred mutilated bodies which is easier to say than “Peter, Mohammed, Manuel, Fatima, Daniel, Sofia, Olivia, Emma, Emma, Wei, Wen, George, Maria, Lucas, Noel, Hanna, Aya, Xian[...]”

Reconstruct the details: wheelbarrow trails through debris. A left at the corner of a collapsed tenement: fault lines around her eyes like the imprint of a laugh. The journalist in a pin-striped three piece asks her questions. They all end with “..., right?” She shakes her head, dislodging masonry. The journalist walks away, kicking over a pile of rocks.

– Grass and trees grow over a makeshift hill. – Note to self: Paraphrase woman's words for headline. – Note to self: pick up groceries on the way home.
