How do I maximize the shelf life of the food in my refrigerator that is only being powered by a small generator? answers

I live in Puerto Rico and we are about to get slammed with a category 5 hurricane. We are almost guaranteed to lose power for at least a week or two. We own a small generator (2000 volts) that will run a refrigerator, a couple fans, and charge up phones, etc... for roughly 8 hours on a single tank of gas. My basic question is how to optimize our generator use, while not overworking it while making our food last as long as possible. Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing?
