Bit of back ground: I'm nineteen years old and I work for a large ski resort in California that gives employees the option to stay in housing provided by the resort. I have been living in housing since July third 2017. (I had lived here previously as well but moved out.) I live with five other guys and actually share a room with one of them (six guys in three rooms). Our rent is paid on a daily basis instead of monthly because employees tend to come and go on a moments notice and all utilities are included in our rent. Two guys just moved out, property management will come by when people move out to make sure they actually left and aren't still living there and inspect the other rooms as well. In our kitchen we have one standard sized refrigerator / freezer for all six of us which fills up quite quickly so naturally a few of the employees (including myself) have brought mini fridges up.
The problem: Housing management came by today to inspect and make sure that the two guys moved out. The two guys left us their fridges so now we have one full sized refrigerator and three personal mini fridges (two are theirs and one is mine). The four of us in our room got an email stating that we needed to unplug our fridges within twenty four hours because "staff accommodations cannot permit mini-fridges..." it also said that "Staff Accommodations will return on Thursday, September 21st to ensure the apartment is in compliance.". This email was sent to me and the three remaining roommates, none of the other employees living in housing, unlike the email we got a week ago notifying us that rent would be going up which went to everyone living in housing. Nowhere on my lease contract is there any rules against having these appliances. They have come by three previous times while I have been living here and not said a single thing about mine which was in the living room area or the other two in the bedrooms, they only said anything when they were all three next to each other. On top of it they want us to get our appliances off the premises which for all of us would be very costly because that would either mean selling them, trashing them, or sending them home which none of us have the time, or money to do.
Why I need help: I know that staff accommodations is actively trying to kick employees out to make room for other new employees because they've made false accusations against us before and searched our apartment with no cause, and all around harassing us. My roommate has said that we can argue that we need to have them in there because it would be a health hazard to have their one refrigerator so full of food that circulation becomes minimal and makes our food go bad. On top of that, none of our contracts / lease agreements state that we cannot have these appliances in our rooms and they have not provided us with a updated version of the lease agreement to sign that includes the rule they just added. If we lose this spot in housing we have no other option but to go home, we all came up here because we love the mountains and the sports. We live in housing because everywhere in town we would be paying the same amount monthly just for rent, not utilities and such. My roommate is going to get his lawyer involved but I don't know what to do in this situation. Do we have an actual argument on our hands? If so should I think about getting a lawyer? Thank you.
