I read a children's book as a kid that I now am trying to find for my own children as it fascinated me and sparked many trips of the imagination for me and I think they would love it.
A boy is tasked by the king to find some magical mystery liquid called petrol that will bring his wagon to life. As the world is described it has a very medieval time period feel to it in terms of the culture and technology, but the illustrations show people living in the hulks of old airliners, farming inside the walls of ruined big box stores and the like without any clue what their adopted homes and farms once were. There are some anachronisms like people using a refrigerator turned over on it's back and filled with water to wash clothes, while they use an old washing machine to store potatoes, again without any inkling of the original purpose of the scavenged appliances, which are useless for their intended purposes anyway due to a complete lack of electricity. The boy passes by multiple gas stations and other fuel sources looking for the mythical petrol and never realizes that they had anything to do with the object of his quest.
Does this ring any bells for anyone? I'd love to find this book again!
