TLDR: If you are anywhere near Santa Fe, NM go see this if you like video games with mysteries, secret rooms and exploring.
The House of Eternal Return is an interactive art exhibit in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
WAIT don't go. Calling it an interactive art exhibit is like calling Fallout 4 a scripted FPS. It is so much more, it is as if someone took the 7th Guest, Myst, Portal, No Mans Sky, and a slew of other video games and made them real. Then they turn you loose to walk through this world.
It is built inside an old bowling alley, and you start out standing in front of a two story Victorian house that looks like the one on the cover of the 7th Guest. And just like the 7th guest, there is a underling mystery that you can solve, if you want to. From here you can go anywhere, if you see a door, and it opens, you can go through it, secret passages, they are all over the place, I went through the one in the refrigerator.
Every object can be picked up and looked at, played with, and every knob or switch seems to do something. Sit down in the master bedroom, and use the computer there, sure, it helps to tell the story. Open the mailbox in the front yard and read the letters, yes, more backstory. It is a lot like any video game where you find notes, clues, or holotapes that tell the back story. To me it was much along the lines of Halo ODST backstory, but mashed up with some HP Lovecraft.
After you go through a secret passage, or even just into the back yard, things get strange, and wired. The world you are in changes as well, drawing heavily not only on SciFi elements but fantastical worlds. Once again you can explore everything, touch everything. I spent two hours walking around, and I could have easily spent two more.
This was obviously influenced by video games, and built by gamers. No I don't have any pictures from my visit. But if you want to see some and read more about this, check out the Ars Tech article about it.
I commonly buy a video game and play it so much the first day that I dream about it at night, I am in the game in my dream. This is the first time that I have had that feeling in my waking life.
