Looking for home warranty data points Frugal

I have a home warranty that covers all of my appliances. I have an older A/C and a used refrigerator, so I figure that those could go out any time, making the home warranty worth it.

This past weekend, my A/C went out, and so I called the home warranty company to send someone out to fix it. As you likely know, the HW company just contracts the work out to local A/C service companies, so the guy that came out didn't work for the HW company.

I'm still trying to decide if the home warranty is a wise purchase for me, so I was asking him some questions about what the cost of the repair would have been had I not purchased the home warranty. He said that this repair wouldn't have been too much (~$200), but that the home warranty companies always find a way get out of any expensive repairs.

If the home warranty companies will find a way to screw me on the expensive repairs (should they be needed someday), then I will definitely not be renewing my warranty at the end of this year. Small repairs I can afford and do myself, so I only really need the HW for expensive repairs.

So, I wanted to see who out there has experience with an expensive repair ($500+) through a home warranty company. Did they pay out? If not, what was their justification?

tl;dr - has anybody had experience with a home warranty company paying out for an expensive repair/replacement or refusing to pay out for an expensive repair/replacement?
