ELI5:How do some refrigerators make ice, know when to make ice, and know when to stop producing more ice? explainlikeimfive

Some refrigerators like the one in my household create ice to dispense into a cup for cool drinking, but sometimes there is none and sometimes the large container at the top is filled to the brim.
