Weekly discussion - Couples' meals AskCulinary

Valentine's day is Tuesday, and the consensus is that you're better-off cooking at home.

What do you do especially for date meals, or for small gatherings?

Or, if you're trying to impress, how can we help? What do you need troubleshot?

EDIT: for good food writing on the topic, look at the NYTimes which includes the following memorable paragraphs:

The chicken gains a kind of rich density in the cooking. The flavors concentrate and deepen. You pull it from the oil when it’s done and allow it to chill uncovered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to crisp it up in a hot pan while the potatoes roast unattended in the oven and you discipline the parsley with a knife and mix it with a salty, acidic mustard dressing that complements the bird.

Flirt while you cook. Then serve the meal on a table set with candles and cloth napkins, alongside something delicious to drink. Feel no pressure whatsoever about making any of this appear to be more perfect or romantic than it is. The food will be delicious, but as Amanda Cohen pointed out, food in this context is hardly the point. “Why eat?” she said. “Don’t you want to be having sex instead?”
