Is it ok to unplug a fridge from the wall to let the freezer compartment fully defrost? HomeImprovement

I'm having issues with my fridge where it's not getting cold enough for whatever reason, the fridge part is somewhat cold but like 12 degrees Celsius (should be 3-5 degrees).. And the freezer compartment, food is actually thawing. I've thrown out all the food.

Is it ok to unplug the power cord from the wall to let everything defrost (not that there's much to defrost really, seems everything is melted already since it's not getting to a freezing temp) so I can "reset" everything and test to see if it'll freeze properly again?

Or should i leave it plugged in, but instead press the temp button inside the fridge that says "hold 3 sec cooling off"? Is there any difference?

Or should a fridge always be on for whatever reason and it's not good to turn it off, due to the freezer coils or whatever?

It's a Whirlpool manufactured in 2012, so it's pretty modern refrigerator if that makes a difference (doesn't use freon right?)

If i turn it completely off, how long should i leave it (i was thinking 24 hours?), and do i have to do anything else, like leave the door open or something?

Thanks!
