Using a temperature controller and heater to warm the inside of a fridge during winter. Homebrewing

Okay, so I've acquired a full size fridge for free and I want to use it in my first foray into more precise temperature controlling. However, it HAS to be located in my garage, and since I live in Michigan, it will get too cold during the fall/winter months.

So, here's my current thought: since it's a full sized fridge it would be easy for me to put a small space heater inside the fridge alongside a carboy. Couldn't I just plug the temperature controller (such as this one) into the heater and it would work the same way as if it were plugged into the fridge during warmer months? As I understand, doesn't the controller simply switch the power back on once the ambient temperature changes within several degrees of the target temperature?
