OK, first off I apologize for any format issues, I'm on my phone and it's super late/early. At this point I'm not too sure what to do. I recently (first of aug) moved out of my apt. The reason being was the landlord was refusing to do repairs. The swamp cooler unit broke down a year prior to me moving. This cause huge water damage in the apt. He fixed the ceiling that fell through but that was it. Gave us a shoddy window unit ac to use. He hired some shady guy who was supposed to repair the swamp cooler when ceiling collapsed. He did not, this guy actually stole the inner components of the unit! Landlord refused to replace the tile and finally in June told us we need to buy our own new ac unit. The doors to the building did not function or seal correctly, the back door allowed rain and dust etc through.
I always paid rent on time and never withheld rent even though I was told I was in the right to do so. Finally it just came time I had to move. I wasn't going to pay for a place that was falling apart(the shoddy ceiling work was already coming apart). We moved out and cleaned the apt. It literally looked better than when we moved in. He did a walk through and said everything looked good and he'd send the deposit back. Fast forward to a couple days ago and I receive a bill for 1300$! He's trying to bill me for water damage caused by his units, claims my dogs destroyed his building, and is trying to charge me 300$ for a refrigerator that was left from the prior Tennant that he said we could use or just throw away if we don't want it. Family members are suggesting I go to small claims and Sue for back rent on the months he never did repairs, but I have no idea how to proceed. The other Tennant in the apt next door to us is going through the same thing with this guy not doing repairs as well. Any advice is appreciated.
