Dried 'Parmesan' Shelf Life Question Cooking

I really like a bit of Parmesan* cheese on my Italian* food, but it always seems to go bad long before I can use it. It seems as if, for something with very little moisture that lives in the back of a refrigerator, it should last longer. So, my question is this, how far past the best buy date is it safe to eat dried Parmesan cheese? Is the best buy date only best quality?

*Yes, I know what I'm eating isn't Italian, and what I'm putting on it absolutely isn't Parmesan, but I'm a poor college student doing what I can.
