+$1500 damages fee for small, 4-bedroom bungalow left cleaned and well maintained. ADVICE NEEDED! legaladvice

It would be a huge help to receive some advice from this community.

Here is the story. Myself and three roommates rented a four bedroom, small-sized home in Denver, CO for two years while attending undergraduate school. Upon the end of our time in Denver (June), we packed up, cleaned and went on our merry way to other corners of the U.S. I emailed our landlord about a two months ago, in July, to verify my new address to forward the security deposit. His response was polite and brief as he explained it would be in the mail shortly.

I've just now received a letter from our landlord explaining that we will be receiving $40 dollars of the $500 we each paid for the security deposit.

These damages include: $300 for "smoke damages" in one of the bedrooms, $300 to clean two toilets, $300 to clean the oven and microwave, $100 to clean refrigerator, $100 for reported "general cleaning,"

Among other things, the damages added up to a total of $1690. I am dumbfounded by this letter and his totals. Prior to our departure, he emailed the four of us to suggest that if we chose not to clean the home, he would hire a service that bills $45/hour for two hours minimum - a minimum fee of $180. We found that price to be too high for our student budget so we opted to clean. Our cleaning process included an entire scrub down of the house including the stove and microwave, walls, floors, bathrooms, etc. It seemed to be in really great shape, which was the standard we kept for the house over our two year stay. To charge us over $1500 dollars to clean the house seems like an outrage to me.

I am so frustrated yet unsure if there is anything we can do. I understand that its possible for landlords to not return a security deposit, but the fees he has presented us seem entirely inflated. If anyone has any advice on this matter, it would mean a great deal to hear what you have to say.
