OP's Note: This is a story a friend and I are writing for a series. It is currently finished, aside from revising and stuff, but for now, I'm only posting this. If it gets positive feedback, I'll post the full thing. Forgive the lack of indentation, we use the auto-indent on Docs and it doesn't transfer and I'm too lazy to manually add it in. I apologize if this post is done wrong, it's my first time on this subreddit.
(Primary) Author's Note: Spells and magic, which exist in this story, are chanted in Sydonai, the language of the gods. This language is also prominently spoken as a communicative tool on Aidonys, a sort of future replacement of Earth. Not much, if any, is used in this excerpt, but it's important nonetheless.
Prologue
Long ago, in the ages before man, there was but one being, and but one plane. This being had no name, and it felt no purpose, for around it there was nothing. It existed for what may have been eons until something sparked inside of it. It felt something; something stronger than the nothingness that surrounded it. There was a flash, and this being gave itself shape, voice, and a purpose. With the infinite capability it held, it created beings of immense power, almost to match its own. It pulled from the void particles and pieces of particles, and put these together. He filled the nothingness with massive stars and gargantuan galaxies. He spoke to the Gods that he had made, telling them “You are to obey these commands, children. You will rule this plane that exists from nothing. You will create what you will, and destroy what you will. However, anyone may stop you except each other. You will claim your land, find your purpose… And we will play an eternal game.”
However, the gods were confused. They were all different. Where was the fun in disagreement? “You will soon find your answers,” one above the others spoke once again. “This place is yours. I dub you Ragfel - The God of the Cursed End, Ayu'shin - The God of Pain, Dakari - The Goddess of Darkness, Chanki - The Goddess of Greed, Rasteki - The God of Flames, Serinshin, the Goddess of Lust, Maihaal - The God of Fear, to be Ragnas, the beings of darkness and suffering.”
“I dub the rest of you,” he continued his list in a new paragraph so that it didn’t suck to read, “Himeya - The Goddess of Control, Kirises - The God of Inquisition, Yinyu - The Goddess of Will, Sonuka - The Goddess of Peace, Listes - The God of Omens, Akis - The Goddess of Life and Nature,” he paused for a moment, looking towards the fourteenth god, who shined, with a fur coat, a long snout, and small, round ears atop his doglike head. He nodded to the bear, declaring “And you are Daiken, the God of Justice.”
So it was, that this high being declared the rules of the newly created Universe, as well as declared its rulers. He depicted himself as an immense, winged, reptilian beast, and named himself Du’shin, so he could be the balance between the imminent conflicts…
But he also waited in hope that the gods forget the oncoming conflict; to make way for their ascension.
Chapter 1
The Hero’s Awakening
Sunset drifted past as quickly as ever. Signs of dusk began to darken the sky, and life was normal, peaceful. Ninnus Soar, a boy of early fifteen, sat at the kitchen table, finishing the last of his history homework, explaining things like ‘The Great War of 200R.H was ended by the bravery of Charles Genohan, former student of G.O.C Academy. Large roles were also played by his companions, Sera Myrano and Hyne Lilian.’ His mother informed him of the sudden change of time and he went off to bed.
Ninnus laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. He heard the remaining people outside driving their cars and playing music. “My grandmother died last weekend…” he whispered to himself. “No matter how many times I say it, I still can’t believe it. Why do bad things have to happen? Why can’t everything just be fun and happy? I don’t understand this world…” The moon peeked at him through his window, and he watched it as all else disappeared from his vision and he dozed. He dreamt of a tall tower, reaching into a dark sky. Its tip pierced the clouds, and moonlight flooded the tip, showing the presence of the clouds. There was an opening into the tower, so he walked inside. The interior was dank and smelled of wet dirt, and there was no light anywhere, but something urged him forward despite the fear the situation endowed. He saw a set of stairs on the far side of the room as his eyes adjusted to the darkness. As he ascended the stairs, he heard a noise, like a small chuckle from the room above. He made his way to the room to find it completely empty. He moved onward, searching for the voice that produced the chuckle, and found nothing. He climbed about three more floors before he expected to be nearing the top. He considered giving up, and just as he did, he heard it again – a soft laugh, from the room above. His curiosity piqued once again, and he ascended the last flight of stairs. The room was vacant, but it smelled worse than the rest, like old meat left out of the refrigerator too long that had begun to rot. He felt a draft on the back of his neck, and he turned around.
Staring at him was a dark figure with a single glowing amber eye.
He swelled with fear at the sight of it, stepping away. He didn’t know what it was, where he was, or what to do anymore. He glanced behind the shade, and there stood another, tall and wide. It looked more menacing, and its eyes were a red darker than crimson, but still illuminate enough to cause a glare in Ninnus’s vision. It didn’t scare him as much as the small one, but he felt more threatened by it nonetheless. The shade with the amber eye vanished, leaving not a trace of its existence behind, and a girl’s scream could be heard from everywhere, though it came from nowhere. The tall shade with red eyes smirked, its teeth as shiny as its eyes, though they were white as snow.
A deep voice filled the room along with the screams, booming out “There is no rest – You cannot stop it – The end will come – Malice will rule…” and a laugh echoed. Ninnus was about to collapse from anxiety when he felt something take his hand. He looked behind him, where he felt the hand come from, and saw a girl with the top half of her face hidden by shadow. Her right eye was glowing amber, the left one was nowhere to be seen, but a light purple mark traced its way down from where the eye should be.
“Do not fear,” she said. “Trust me.” She held out her other hand, as a gesture for Ninnus to take it. The tall shade began coming closer to him, closer every glance he took behind him.
“Okay,” he replied. He gulped, and then took the girl’s hand. It felt cold. She shuddered, and her hand began to feel warmer, more living. The giant shade frowned, and then vanished as well.
“You cannot stop the end,” it moaned.
Ninnus awoke, calmly opening his eyes again. The moon had shifted remarkably since he had last closed his eyes, so he assumed he had been asleep for a while. “What was that?” he muttered.
“You want to know?” he heard a girl’s voice ask him, coming from the end of his bed.
Ninnus looked towards where the voice came from. It was a girl, who kneeled down in front of his bed’s foot-table. She looked a little younger than he was, with long red hair and two different colored eyes. One was amber, and the other was blood red. He noticed that her shoulders were bare, so however she got there, she did so without clothing. He realized the situation he was in, and froze in panic with a gasp. “Wha-what the heck? Who is this person, why don’t they have clothes? She looks like that girl who was in my dream, but that isn’t possible… but, then, I don’t remember this girl in my room before I fell asleep!”
“I’ll tell you what it was about, your dream. You don’t seem to recognize me, so I’ll need to introduce a few things to you, anyway,” she continued. She looked like she wanted to stand, but then she looked down at herself and shivered. “But first, can I borrow something to wear? I didn’t expect becoming real to strip me the way it has…” Ninnus nodded slowly, like his neck was a rusty hinge. He pointed, his hand shaking, to his wardrobe.
“Ah, thank you,” she replied, smiling. Then, her expression changed, and she whispered “Mìrnae negen.” Ninnus’s vision clouded until he could only see black. He struggled, patting his face and whimpering for a while, until the girl cancelled the spell by saying “Mìr gen.” and waving her finger. Ninnus’s vision returned, and he saw that she was wearing a red T-shirt of his and a pair of jeans with several holes dotting the legs. Her skin shone pale white in the moonlight, and she hummed uncomfortably to herself. She waited a few seconds for Ninnus to say something, but he just laid there on his bed, whining quietly. She sighed disappointedly, then asked politely, “May I have your name?”
“Eh?” Ninnus answered.
“Your name. Are you brain-dead or something?” she asked, taking on a more casual tone.
“N-N-Ninnus!” he blurted.
“Alright, what’s the rest of your name, Ninnus?”
“Ninnus Soar, that’s my name.”
“Wonderful. We’re off to a great start. To be sure you don’t start being an idiot again; I’ll introduce myself as well. I am Carolyn Anesthesia Genohan, one of many in a line of royalty and heroes.”
“So you’re related to Charles Genohan from the war 250 years ago?” Ninnus asked, sitting up.
“I’d assume he’s my father, but I can’t quite remember,” she replied.
“Then there’s no way you can be here now! You should be dead!”
“Allow me to explain,” she began. “I am a Ragnas.”
“Like, from the stories?” Ninnus asked.
“Exactly like them. You see, 227 years ago, when I was twelve, a sorcerer summoned a tornado with immense power. It mowed down the landscape, and, unfortunately, me. However, it seems that I was cursed before birth with the status of Ragnas. I was extremely powerful, as well, and my father decided that I should be able to defend myself, so he trained me himself what he had been taught at his school. Unfortunately, I couldn’t learn to control the darkness, and people would fall around me, strangled by the sheer raw energy produced just by my presence.”
“That explains the scariness of the dream, I guess,” Ninnus pondered. “This girl is really weird. No one else acts like this… I know, this is still a dream! I’ll have to follow her to get to the end, I guess.”
“I can’t fully explain the dream you had quite yet, but you were able to pull me from your dreams, from death even, because you are something that is called a Lifemaker.
“What is that?” Ninnus asked, perplexed.
“The name Lifemaker is a bit of a misnomer, you see,” Carolyn explained. “It is defined as a very rare magical person appearing in recent mythology who has the ability to travel through different planes of existence at will. It is known as ‘Lifemaker’ because you can bring anything with you – there or back – and it will maintain physical existence, including people.”
“Then is that all you wanted? To use me to bring yourself back to life so you can go be a demon?” Ninnus accused in a stale voice.
“Not quite,” Carolyn replied, smiling in amusement. “I need you to help me gather certain magical objects known as Lore Stones. They contain magic called Lore, knowledge granted by the Fifteen gods that grant their abilities for a worthy human to use. I want the Gen Lore stones, which are granted by Himeya. Unfortunately, Himeya isn’t the most involved god in the bunch, and I’ve only read of three stones being recorded to exist anywhere in the entire world.”
“I don’t think we have any chance of finding a single one of those…”
“But that’s all we’ll need,” Carolyn finished.
Footfalls resounded from the hallway. Ninnus’s mother had heard them.
“Crap! Hide!” Ninnus whispered and screamed at the same time. He opened the door to his closet then shoved Carolyn inside to her disapproval. He then lay down as fast as he had stood.
Ninnus’s door creaked open as his mother looked inside at him. Her cautious senses observed his rapid breathing, and even the static on his blanket that came from his jumping onto it. She sighed, then left without a word. Carolyn opened the closet door, beckoning to Ninnus. “Follow me. I’ll show you where we can talk,” She replied, then whispered “Seka’Liso.” A hole erupted in the floor, a cloudy blue swirl inside. She began to step inside. Ninnus quickly followed, excited for the fun adventures to start.
“Wait!” he ceased. He grabbed a backpack and a few outfits, rushed to the bathroom for his toothbrush, and scribbled a note to his mom. Carolyn sighed, then grabbed his arm and dragged him into the portal. His mother watched from down the hallway as he entered the portal, a confused smile on his face. “He’s going to have adventures of his own, huh? I hope he stays safe… I’ll have to do something about his absence from school, though.
