In a refrigerator, what is in the space between the freezer and the fridge? Appliances

In a fridge that has a freezer top and refrigerator below, what is inside the solid space that separates the compartments?

I have an idea where I would like to take an old fridge and cut out the separation and use the now larger space for hanging a deer during hunting season, but I am unsure if the space houses critical components for the operation of the appliance.

Any information in this regard is appreciated. Thanks
