The Truth nosleep

I have always wanted to tell this story, but could never find the nerve. Most of those involved don't like to talk about it anyway. I had to get permission from all of them to share this. To respect their privacy, I won't give away their names, or mine either; instead, I'll refer to everyone by random names.

I want to make it clear that I am not sharing this story for attention or with the intention to scare people. For millennia, humans have argued over the existence of the paranormal, with many believing it to be a bunch of BS. Before this happened, I myself was something of a skeptic. But now I know the truth, and I want others to know what's out there. It can be extremely dangerous, and not everyone is as lucky as my friends and I were.

Anyway, on with the story.

This happened five years ago, when I was thirteen. I was at a family reunion and my cousins and I, as well as my cousin "Lucy"'s best friend and boyfriend, had escaped to the basement, which was your typical teen hang-out room, with a widescreen TV, video game console, and a tiny refrigerator that Lucy liked to sneak beers into. That particular afternoon, there were eight of us down there, including me, whom I will refer to as "Kara."

We are all kind of sitting around, talking and telling stupid jokes, when Lucy's boyfriend, "Dave", leaned over and whispered something in her ear. She gave him a weird look, but nodded, and Dave got up and left the room. He returned about a minute later, with a Ouija board.

We all knew what it was. Some of us (including me) laughed and teased Dave for owning something so silly, but the others looked fascinated and a little freaked out. Dave set down the board, grinning mischievously.

"You can't be serious," I said. "Lucy, why did you let him bring that here?"

"Actually, Kara, it's mine," said Lucy. "I found it at this antique shop down the street from my school, and they sold it to me for just five dollars. I wanted to use it, but I was too nervous, so I hid it away until Dave discovered it last month. We've been trying to contact ghosts, but we have't had any luck."

"That's because it's not real," I said. I couldn't believe my older cousin, who was going off to college in September, was acting so immature. But I decided to go along with it.

"Okay, let's try it," I said. "But nothing will happen."

Lucy turned off the lights and we all gathered in a thigh circle around the ouija board, where Dave placed his hands on the planchette. "Is anyone here?"

Almost instantly, the planchette began to move, spelling out Y-E-S.

"Not funny, Dave," someone said.

"I'm not cheating!" Dave insisted.

"He wouldn't," said Lucy.

"Fine, then," I said. "Ask it something only 'Jake' here would know." Jake shot me a dirty look.

"What was the lowest grade on Jake's last report card?" asked Dave. He had only met Jake that day, so it was highly unlikely he'd know.

"C," said the board.

Jake looked ready to shit enough bricks to build a a ten-foot wall, and I felt horrible for making him a target. "Ask them who they are, Dave."

This time, the planchette moved very slowly. Before that point, I'd been too shocked to be scared, but as the message formed together in my mind, my blood turned colder than Siberia in the dead of January.

Y-O-U-R W-O-R-S-T N-I-G-H-T-M-A-R-E

Before I could scream, or pass out, or whatever, I heard a sound that is still background music in my nightmares to this very day. Even now, I can't really describe it. It was somewhere between a laugh and a growl, and was full of evil and insanity. I have never heard anything like it since, and let me tell you, I'm getting the chills just writing about it.

After the laugh faded out, I looked across the circle, shaking in terror, and my sight landed on Lucy. Or, where Lucy had been sitting a minute ago. The thing looked like Lucy, with her flowing blond hair and milky white skin. But its eyes were pure black, more like black holes than eyes, and the expression on its face... it was the definition of catatonic, no emotion whatsoever. It was completely devoid of emotion, or an ounce of humanity. It doesn't haunt me as much as the laugh, but it was terrifying.

I must have screamed. So did the others, but I didn't hear anything. I was petrified in terror, but felt a sudden surge of adrenaline, picked up the board, and threw it across the room, where it shattered. Then I blacked out.

The next part is hazy at best. When I came to, I was up in Lucy's room, lying on her bed, and my aunt was wiping my forehead with a damp cloth. She told me I'd fainted. I started babbling about the demonic laugh and Lucy being possessed, but she told me to stay quiet. She then explained that we'd been playing video games when I complained about not feeling well, stood up to go to the bathroom, and collapsed.

Later, I confronted Dave, and he told me he'd lied so we wouldn't get in trouble. As for Lucy, she was fine, having no memory of whatever took over her. She didn't remember anything past Dave presenting the board. It was in dozens of pieces, and couldn't be fixed. She later burned it and dumped the ashes down a storm drain.

To this day, none of us know exactly what happened, but I'm pretty sure a demon was there. I don't know if me destroying the oiuja board was what stopped it, but my cousins say Lucy went back to normal after I fainted. Whatever the case, I never want to play with a ouija board again.

So there you have it. That is the truth. You don't have to believe it; I wouldn't have either. But there are things out there we can't explain. And what happened with that ouija board was by far the scariest thing I've ever experienced.
