So a few recent articles and posts on this sub have inspired me to post here about my situation.
So a little backstory I am a 23 year old male and I live in north Texas with my parents due to job and medical issues.
From what I can remember my mom has always been a hoarder and only until recently have I realized what a huge impact it is having on our family. My dad and I aren't hoarders but we let it go on because my mom is too difficult to work with and we have lost all motivation to do anything about it. Every time we try to clean up she goes berserk and usually ends up rummaging through the trash and saving much of what we threw out anyway. My mom also is a shopaholic constantly ordering stuff, mostly clothes and shoes, from places like Amazon and eBay and in almost every room of the house has floor-to-ceiling piles of her clothing. Much of it is still unopened and has the price tags on it. I even have baby clothes with the price tags on it that are probably at least 20 years old by now. I can no longer even enter my bedroom because the doorway is blocked with a 6 foot tall pile of clothes so I have been sleeping on the couch.
Our house was always messy but it has gotten to the point where it has become debilitating both mentally and physically. Over the years of neglect it has gotten worse and worse as well as our health and state of mind. Physically speaking we have all put on a lot of weight over the past few years and developed many health issues that may or may not be related to our living conditions. Mentally we all seem to be very unmotivated and stressed. My mom typically spends her whole day on the computer browsing Facebook or playing Facebook games and my dad watches TV. I usually bounce between TV and PC depending on what I have going on. I am no psychiatrist but I am assuming we are all doing this to escape reality which makes sense given our environment.
Just a breakdown of some of the current issues as they come to me:
- Piles of stuff (mostly clothes) in every room with only narrow paths to walk through. Some rooms are completely inaccessible. Tons of unopened boxes from Walmart, Amazon, eBay... who knows what is in them.
- Almost no working appliances. Washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, oven, and 1 toilet all broken. AC doesn't work so we have 2 window AC units to cool down ~1800 sqft. house and in the 100 degree summer weather it is usually 80-85 degrees in the house. Heat barely works luckily it doesn't get that cold in TX. Refrigerator mostly works but is filled with tons of expired junk.
- Half the power outlets don't work so we have extension cords and power strips to utilize working outlets throughout the house.
- Fireplace has a leak and during the bad flooding a few months ago it completely ruined the inside of the house. The carpet is all moldy and rancid. Also 20 years of pet stain buildup in various locations.
- Various pest infestations - carpet beetles, roaches, fruit flys, rats in the garage.
- Outside - what little grass we have left hasn't been mowed, weeds and vines everywhere, our pool is green and filled with algae.
My mom wants us to move out into a smaller place due to money issues and it would cost an unreasonable amount of money to repair everything wrong with our house. We were all on board with the idea but nobody wants to lift a finger to clean up and prepare to move. Although I can't really blame them because I have been telling myself for the last month or so "tomorrow I am going to wake up and start cleaning" but when that time comes around and I wake up to see the mess in front of me I completely lose all motivation again and I assume it is the same with my parents.
Anyway I just really needed people to talk too since it would be too embarrassing to talk to anyone I know in real life and we don't have the money to seek any professional help or advice.
