I'm living at and cooking for a vegetarian household of four people in Cambodia. We eat egg, but not fish. A little dairy is ok but it is kinda expensive and not preffered. We have a basic kitchen with no oven or refrigerator, a single gas burning stove, a blender, grater, and basic cooking supplies. We have access to most ingredients you would find in a western supermarket, but many of these items are overpriced, and we are very cheap. The local markets have roughly the same stuff that you would find in most of SE Asia. Stir fry veggies and rice is getting old and I'm running out of ideas! I have experience cooking professionally and otherwise in a wide range of styles, but this is stumping me a bit.
Things that are cheap here...
rice white flour eggs yellow peas soybeans black beans black eyed peas peanuts tofu Lemongrass kafir lime onion daikon tomatoes garlic cilantro mint sweet basil carrots morning glory garlic scapes lotus stem mustard greens asian celery green onion japanese eggplant bok choy birds eye chilies potato shallots red and green peppers bitter melon luffa jicama winter melon dragon's tail stalks turmeric okra daikon chayote mabalar spinach msg asian coriander fish wort saw leaf bean sprouts tapioca galanga enoki mushrooms shitake mushrooms oyster mushrooms straw mushrooms limes oranges banana napa and savoy cabbage baguettes coconuts pineapple durian jackfruit mango papaya palm oil soy sauce mangosteen lychee rambutan star anise cardamon tamarind ginger palm sugar long beans banana blossoms watermelon black pepper ma-om saom taro root kafir leaves finger root
Any outside of the box suggestions? At the very least, making a list of all my ingredients will be helpful for me, and hopefully interesting to you. Thanks!
