Alpha 11 New Features and.... and Berg RimWorld

I've been playing RimWorld for a while and I'd like to share a tale. First off, the new features of Alpha 11 are excellent additions. I didn't get a chance to experience the sappers yet, but those wargs, man.

I present to you why I stayed up too late, a mini story in four parts.

TL;DR: Go to Part IV

Click here... it's our hero, Berg

PART I

On the tundra, would you rather die to frostbite or wildlife?

I finally got to run a base on the Ice Sheet, which I was hoping to be more DF-style icy... but it's still great. Grew as much potatoes as possible from June until they all died off in August to prepare for the coldest of winters. The colonists stayed alive on a mixture of potatoes and meat raining from the sky in drop pods (lols).

I built into the mountains with a little outcropping, creating a killbox on the only way in or out. The lonesome sentry gun I kept near the sandbags was destroyed by the following, noninclusive:

  • Raiders (pirates / tribal)
  • Squirrels
  • Wargs
  • Rabid Squirrels

Despite my bad luck with my defenses, my population was reaching five toward the crest, with two prisoners in the "holding pen."

I didn't know prisoners could beat each other unconscious, I swear they didn't do this before My warden was supposed to tell them that there was room for everyone...

Also metal is scarce on my side of the map, so my colonists would get there, mine ~14%, then decide they're hungry and trek back. I had to micro. :(

*PART II *

While under attack, we accepted a fugitive into the base who... couldn't sneak past the first wave.

We lost three people in a short amount of time. Including a prisoner who proved he would rather freeze for months than join us. I mean he had a parka on, but there's no way he couldn't taste the frostbite. Has anyone ever complained about the time commitment required to keep prisoners? ;)

After selling someone to a passing space pirate and a particularly bad raid, I was left with two very wounded, very upset colonists. Asking Ole Rob to heal up Amelia was his tipping point. As his own blood trickled out while patching up the multiple gunshot wounds the only remaining doctor suffered, Ole Rob went berserk.

He wanted a few feet north into a dark hallway and rapidly flashed his shoddy assault rifle at shadows in the hall before running to the stock room. Amelia.. bled out.

Just then, a wanderer named Berg joined the colony. He proceeded to the supply room to subdue "Ole Rob" but arrived just in time to find his body cooling.

Berg was alone in a base with sporadic power failures and a misconfigured stockpile, but 90+ units of chocolate from Zeus

PART III

Low metal, low wood, plenty of crappy parkas, four bedrooms to choose from

Some say Berg had a paradise, but others say he walked into a frost-dominated prison cell. At least the food couldn't spoil. Some Toxic fallout, visitors, and wargs larger, if Berg hadn't seen this chaos during his time as a wanderer, he sure did now.

Some hostile tribals paid the colony's new tenant a visit. Berg installed a turret a few feet inside the front door to the base and tried to lure them in. One took the bait and Berg's poor combat skills helped him to better understood the taste of a stone club. After running off and letting the turret do the dirty work, the remaining tribals left after smashing down the solar panels and ripping up the power conduits.

Looking at it, they probably thought this was a pretty boring trip

Ultimately, Berg took a rough beating but ultimately only suffered bruises. After securing a bit of metal and burying some bodies, a new message came in:

A killbot has come to sell some kill cookies

PART IV

I was actually pretty nervous irl, how the H would Berg kill a scyther if he can't defend himself against tribals

Berg immediately set traps behind main doors and one behind the refrigerator (cooled to the outside). The Scyther went about breaking electronics in an algorithmic fashion as Berg slept for what would seem the last time.

After an hour, Berg placed a trap outside the storage room where he would make his last stand. The same room he plundered his helmet and vest off of Ole Rob just days before.

He triggered his own trap like a dingus

Berg was offended by RNGesus, but hungry, and took to the dining room to have a simple meal. As he stabbed into the potato and tortoise meat dinner, the turret in front of the base exploded. Just moments after he could spin his head, he was being locked on.

I don't know if it was toying with him, but the Scyther let Berg run to the storage area in a hasty attempt to prepare. As Berg built a trap next to the sprung trap, the Scyther moved to watch him. He built the first one, but didn't have time to rearm the second one before the killbot charged.

Berg took a few pot shots with his assault rifle before getting hit with a blast. Still able to fight, he dove for the EMP grenades and sent one the Scyther's way.

S T U N N E D

Berg got as close as possible with his assault rifle and took shots, hoping, praying to RNGesus that it stays offline a little longer.

Berg won

There was no time for celebration, the base was unsafe, but he just killed in an act of desperation what squads of men can't accomplish without casualty.
