How do refrigerators work? NoStupidQuestions

I've seriously asked about 5 or 6 people and the only answer I ever get is "I dunno". One friend of mine said he thinks it's some kind of air conditioning but when I asked how AC works he said "I dunno" (secondary question how does air conditioning work?). I find it really weird that I have absolutely no clue how something I use every day and take for granted so much even works.
