I've heard some people on the sub talk about a parenting method where you don't tell your kid "no." This morning the first thing my 16-month-old daughter did was open the refrigerator and pull out the canister of whipper cream. I said no, put it back, closed the door and went to change her. The whole time I'm doing that she parrots back "nonononononono."
I think my wife and I tell her "no." way too much. No, don't go behind the couch; no don't climb on the table; no, don't take the cat shit out of her box. I guess I'm not surprised that she's internalizing it, but I am disappointed in myself. I don't want her to feel like she's constantly being restricted, but it is kind of hard to cordon off an area large enough for her to have space to play in our small apartment.
How can I rectify this?
