So, my husband has been paying his fathers mortgage for a few years now. FIL went to prison & my SIL could no longer afford to pay his mortgage, so we got stuck with it, I guess. I told my SO 9 months ago when we got ready to move & buy our own house, his father would need to start paying his own mortgage again, since he's a free bird (and has been for quite a while now). Well, that time has come & gone. We've bought our own house & moved. We are still paying his mortgage! While it may not be much, the few extra hundred dollars could have really helped us along the way. We spent over a month without a refrigerator in our new home because we couldn't afford one. Now, my husband has lost his job. Yet, FILs mortgage is still being automatically withdrawn from our account. Please offer advice on what to do or how to approach this situation with my husband. I do not want to pay this mans mortgage forever because of the mistakes he's chosen to make in his life. I don't mind helping out when needed, but this has really gone on long enough. For the time being we are solely on my income & I do not intend to keep paying this grown mans way while I'm struggling to make ends meet at times myself.
