This has been suggested a few times and I'd like to make it a community effort. I'm going to start listing basic information and common questions in this topic. I'll keep updating this opening post with typical questions and answers that people bring up.
We can start it here and if it gets too big then we can move it to a wiki or some other solution.
BASIC RESOURCES
BASIC INFO
Vandweller - as used in this sub, refers to someone whom is living in their vehicle as their form of residence be it permanent, temporary, by choice or by circumstances. While we do refer to Vans in general, Vandwelling is sort of a catch all for most sorts of vehicle dwelling, be it van, car, truck, step van, ect..ect.
Stealth Camping - is typically when you stay in your vehicle in an urban environment or some other place that is not an approved campground or where you try not to be noticed. Example of common places are neighborhood streets where street parking is acceptable or perhaps a random parking lot.
Boondocking - is typically when you camp off grid in a location which is not a campground, but it's not an unusual or unlawful place to camp. Camping on BLM, state or national for rests are often considered boondocking.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Q: What's the best van to use?
A: This is a much debated question, because there is no perfect van for everyone. Some people like cargo vans with no windows for better security, while some like window vans for ease of driving or conversion vans which blend in well in neighborhoods. Some people find box vans to be beneficial for space while others consider the sprinter vans to be the holy grail and still others choose smaller vans for the better fuel economy. It all comes down to how you intend to use your van as to what will fit your needs the best.
Q: How can I get electricity in my van?
A: There are a few ways to do this, but what suits you best will determine how much electric you will require. If you just need to recharge your basic electrics like a cell phone or laptop with basic lighting at night you can probably get by cheap with just a larger main battery or a second battery which is charged by your alternator.
However if you want to power larger things like a 12v refrigerator or perhaps have access to 110v AC power from an invertor you will likely want to install a solar system or carry a small generator.
