When Emojis Fail
There's no emoji for finding out that coziness is a hallmark of Danish culture. There's no emoji for wondering whether you might have fit in better had you been born in a country with less "freedom" and more coziness. There's no emoji for being embarrassed and proud of creativity, especially when it includes the word emoji in every line.
There's no emoji for feeling the most at ease around cynical adults but hoping to never become like them. There's no emoji for waking up before the sun but realizing that the sun has been up in the lives of people you love. There's no emoji for being afraid you've disappointed everyone for not living up to the dreams you espoused as a child. There's no emoji for finding grammatical errors in print and pretending not to see them to preserve the writer's dignity. There's no emoji for feeling satisfied with the state of your refrigerator.
There's no emoji for the moment a quaint adage speaks deep layers of truth to you and you're sure you are the first to understand it. There's no emoji for insomnia caused by poetry asking to be written -- now. There's no emoji for conflating love of a city with love of friends who live there. There's no emoji for retrospectively realizing that your life is a collection of the grass never being much greener, but only because of how green you were convinced it would be. There's no emoji for being disappointed in the world but knowing that if it were made up of seven billion of you it may or may not be any better. There's no emoji for nostalgia. There's no emoji for waking up exhausted from a dream in which you were very tired. There's no emoji for feeling confident that a specific stranger would make a great friend. There's no emoji for 'Kafka-esque' There's no emoji for how much greater ideas are with eyes shut.
